The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience administers three Majors and has made available a prize to the top student in each. In each case, the prize is awarded to the student with the highest aggregate mark across the four subjects that comprise the Major.

ELIGIBILITY
Awarded to the student completing a Cell and Developmental Biology Major in any year who has the highest score in the core subject CEDB30002 Concepts in Cell & Developmental Biology, combined with the aggregate scores in the best three elective subjects that contribute to the major.
SELECTION
Selection is based on academic performance in 3rd year subjects contributing to the major.
OUTCOME
Prize winners are notified by letter and email.

Who was Dr Jo Lavarack?
John Ochiltree Lavarack was born in 1914 and graduated MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 1938. In 1939 he became a Resident Medical Officer at the Alfred Hospital and in 1940 he joined the armed forces, reaching the rank of Major as a Specialist Pathologist.
In 1947, accepted an appointment in the Department of Pathology at the University of Melbourne and then with the Department of Anatomy in 1949. He worked with Sir Sydney Sunderland on peripheral nerve injury. He is remembered for his teaching in embryology, where his fine blackboard drawings were famous for aiding his clear explanations of a complex subject. In 1953 he was awarded a CJ Martin Fellowship from the NH&MRC and worked at King's College in London. He completed his PhD in 1953 and was appointed Reader in 1956. He died in 1998.

谁是Jo Lavarack博士?

About Emeritus Professor Nancy Milli
Nancy first joined the University of Melbourne in 1952 when she was appointed as a Senior Demonstrator by Professor Syd Rubbo in the then Department of Microbiology. In 1953 she was appointed as lecturer. Early in her career she set up the first Applied Microbiology course in Australia and in 1982 was appointed as a Professor in our Department, a position she held till her retirement. Notably, she was the fourth woman to be appointed Professor at the University of Melbourne.
Throughout her career she was instrumental in bringing together the two worlds of academia and industry serving as Chairperson for the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality and Treatment, a board member of the CRC for Freshwater Ecology, a committee member of Australian Water Advisory Resources Committee, the Council of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences, the National Commission for UNESCO plus many others. Nancy was also Chancellor of La Trobe University from 1992, a position she held until her retirement in 2006.
In the latter part of her career Nancy became involved in the Surveillance of Genetic Engineering and in the early ‘80s she was head of the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Committee and was chairperson of the Commonwealth government’s agency for the surveillance of genetic engineering. She sought to champion this cause through interviews with the media.
She received a number of honours over the course of a long career. In 1977 she was awarded a MBE for her work in biological sciences and in 1990 she was made a Companion of the Order of Australia (CA). She was a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE), a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA), an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Society for Microbiology, and an honorary life member of AusBiotech. In 1993 the University of Melbourne awarded her an honorary Doctorate of Science. Nancy was widely regarded as a national treasure and was one of five Australian scientists to be featured on postage stamps. The CEO of Bio21 Cluster at the University of Melbourne, Dr Jan Tennent, very aptly described her as the "undisputed First Lady of biotechnology in Australia".
In 1987 Nancy was made Emeritus Professor and continued working within the Department up until her retirement in 2012.

SELECTION
The award(s) be granted from time to time to a student(s) by application who intends to or is currently completing a qualification offered within Melbourne Dental School.
A selection committee will determine the successful recipient(s) with the most compelling case for use of the funds of the award, based on nominations forwarded to the Head of School from either staff or students.
The committee consists of at least the following:
a. Two nominees of the Head of the Melbourne Dental School; and
b. MDS Director of Research; and
c. Director of Teaching & Learning at Melbourne Dental School.

Within two months of the conclusion of the award, the recipient will provide a report outlining the key achievements from the program of study undertaken. Donor: The Heads of the Department of Physiology, the Department of Surgery in the Austin and Repatriation General Hospitals, The Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology and Medicine and the Royal Children's Hospital. The prize memorialises Professor Roy Douglas Wright, a long standing member of staff who transformed the Faculty and significantly contributed to tertiary education. He also served as Chancellor of the University from 1980-1989.
