  The establishment of the University of Warwick was given approval by the government in 1961 and received its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965.The idea for a university in Coventry was mooted shortly after the conclusion of the Second World War but it was a bold and imaginative partnership of the City and the County which brought the University into being on a 400-acre site jointly granted by the two authorities. Since then, the University has incorporated the former Coventry College of Education in 1978 and has extended its land holdings by the purchase of adjoining farm land.The University initially admitted a small intake of graduate students in 1964 and took its first 450 undergraduates in October 1965. In October 2013, the student population was over 23,000 of which 9,775 are postgraduates. Around a third of the student body comes from overseas and over 120 countries are represented on the campus.

  Warwick marked its strategy with a wish to be enterprising and outward-looking from its foundation. It sought to match academic excellence with relevance, a policy which was not always popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s but which has become one of its hallmarks and recently led former Prime Minister Blair to say that "Warwick is a beacon among British Universities for its dynamism, quality and entrepreneurial zeal" and President Clinton to give his last major policy address on the campus in December 2000.

  When government decided to fund universities on a more differential basis in the 1980s, which led to sharp downward changes in centrally-provided grants, the University seized the opportunity to look at ways in which it could augment public monies with income generated through its own activities.Many of these ventures are located in departments - thus exemplifying the point about combining academic excellence with enterprise - but they also include three thriving post-experience residential training centres (Arden House [founded in 1982], Radcliffe House [1986] and Scarman House [1991]), retail outlets and an award-winning vacation conference business. The money generated in these ways has been a significant factor in the development of the University both academically and physically.In 1984, the University of Warwick Science Park was opened on a site adjacent to the University, a joint venture between the University and the local authorities of Coventry City, Warwickshire and West Midlands Enterprise. This has developed to become one of the UK's most successful Science Parks with satellites in Coventry and Warwick and managed space in Solihull. The Park is now home to 85 high technology companies and manages 424,000 square feet of space with a turnover of £4.4m.

  1960s:The main campus of the University is situated on land granted by Coventry City Council and Warwickshire County Council in the early 1960s. The first buildings were completed in 1965 (and now house Biological Sciences); by 1970 the Library, Science and Arts Buildings and Rootes Residences had been built on central campus.

  1970s:During the 1970s, further academic and residential accommodation was built on campus, including the Social Sciences building in 1977, Senate House and the Arts Centre (1974) and the Students' Union Building (1975). In 1979, the former Coventry College of Education merged with the University to form what is now the Institute of Education on the Westwood site.

  1980s:The 1980s saw the further expansion of the Arts Centre, the construction of the Jack Martin Halls of Residence and of the purpose built post experience training centre, Radcliffe House (1986) referred to above. In 1989, in partnership with Rover and Rolls Royce plc, the University extended the new Advanced Technology Centre to provide extensive new research facilities.

  1990s:During the 1990s, the built campus continued to develop. Between 1993 and 2000 over £100m of new buildings were erected, notably the construction of the Arthur Vick, Claycroft and Lakeside Residences, the International Manufacturing Centre (1994), the Ramphal Building (1996), and the new Medical School Building and associated Biomedical Research facilities generously funded by the Wolfson Trust and through a successful appeal (2001).Other notable developments have been a joint Students Union and Retail building (1998), Sports Pavilion (1998), the first two phases of a new building for the Warwick Business School (1999 and 2001) and a new building for Computer Science (2000). Since 2000 plans for further building have amounted to a programme of c.£50m.

  2000s:A new Mathematics and Statistics building was opened in 2004 and a major investment in developing the Sports Centre has provided high-class sports facilities, amongst the best of any British university. Warwick’s Institute of Advanced Studies launched in 2007 and the Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning was launched in 2010.The Warwick Digital Laboratory was opened by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in July 2008. In 2009, the Arts Centre's Butterworth Hall underwent a £8million development, and we made extensive improvements to the Students' Union, building extra retail space, cafes, bars and performance areas.

  2010s:Two new student residences, Bluebell and Sherbourne, were opened in 2011 and 2012 respectively, and new science academic buildings are currently under development along with a new extension to Warwick Business School.

  Diamond Science & Technology

  The Diamond Science and Technology Centre for Doctoral Training has diamond based research at the core of all activities. The CDT involves a consortium of nine UK universities and over thirty companies, keen to exploit the vast potential of diamond.Students are funded for four years and in Year 1 will undertake a purpose designed MSc in DST based at Warwick University. As part of the MSc students will undertake two, ten week mini-projects at two different universities (or industrial partners), which link to the theme of their chosen PhD. The PhD takes place in Years 2-4 at one of the nine universities.A stand-alone MSc or individual modules are also offered.Our aim is to create a UK National Centre of Excellence for graduate training in Diamond Science and Technology.The DST CDT will produce students with a skill set that matches the interdisciplinary nature of research required to establish the UK as a front runner in the development and exploitation of emerging DST. With this would come significant opportunity to create new UK businesses and enhance existing ones, driving growth and innovation and creating “high-tech” jobs.

  Magnetic resonance uses quantum physics to create real-world technologies like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We push back the boundaries of these techniques and combine them with emerging research in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP).The Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Integrated Magnetic Resonance (iMR) involves internationally-leading researchers at the Universities of Warwick, St Andrews/Dundee, Southampton, Nottingham and Aberdeen as well as all the major industrial magnetic resonance companies.Fully-funded PhD Projects were available spanning the fields of MRI, EPR, NMR and DNP. Our goal is to unlock creativity and stimulate new technological developments in MR furthering the reach and increasing the impact. The programme was open to graduates with a 1st class degree in Physical Sciences, who were looking for a challenging, interdisciplinary research training environment and had an active interest in the development of new technologies.

  What is Behavioural Science?

  Behavioural science brings together many disciplines to study human behaviour, such as psychology, economics, and biology. Topics of interest include behavioural and experimental economics, cognitive science, judgement and decision making, and the application of economic methods to social phenomena not traditionally included within economics. We examine these topics using quantitative methods, such as experiments, dataset analyses, modelling, and simulations.

  As technology shrinks the space around us, turning the global into the local, there is arguably more need than ever for scholars to contribute to greater understanding between cultures. The theme "Connecting Cultures" brings together the interests of leading scholars from across Warwick, coupling existing and emerging interests with a strong commitment to training the next generation of researchers via their involvement in the research activities that the GRP supports. Key Warwick research in this area focuses on memory, intercultural studies, translation and language politics, urban futures, human rights and global humanities. The GRP aims to contribute at both a theoretical and an applied level to debates around what connects and what distinguishes cultures.

  Cyber Security GRP

  Professor Tim Watson, Director of the University of Warwick's Cyber Security Centre discussed the current state of automotive security at this year's Security and Counter Terror Expo held in London. Professor Watson stated that "Cars are soft targets for hackers. With the right resources and skills it is relatively straightforward to exploit vehicles' vulnerabilities."In the talk attend by a packed audience of industry peers and experts, Professor Watson highlighted that cars are built by engineers and not cyber security specialists and went on to cite several examples of recent hacks such as the one where researchers successfully spoofed the LIDAR system of an autonomous vehicle.“These are soft targets”, said Watson, ”It is relatively straightforward with resources and skills to exploit vehicles.” Moreover, he added, the kinds of people looking to exploit vehicles are not hacktivists and script kiddies, but those with the resources and patience to do so: terrorist groups, organised crime gangs and nation states."“The only thing at the moment that is protecting our vehicles is the fact that they are not remotely connected to the internet,” warned Watson, “but that is changing”.When that does change, it's entirely possible that, for example, ransomware operators might look to vehicles as a lucrative stream of income.It's bad, but it's not that bad, added Watson.   About the Energy GRP

  'Energy' is one of the University of Warwick’s research priorities. The University is addressing global challenges through its world-class multi-disciplinary research.The urgent need for sustainable energy and the drastic reduction of greenhouse gases continues to be of significant global importance as demonstrated by the historic adoption of a new, legally binding global climate deal by 195 countries at the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Conference of Parties in December 2015.This reinforces the need for sustained and substantial investment in energy research and innovation as these changes will only be achieved through technological advances and the Energy GRP at Warwick has given greater cohesion to our research activities. Warwick has core strengths in several key areas of Energy research, including: Power Electronics; Solar Energy; Thermal Energy; Energy Management; Low Carbon Transport and Energy Storage.With a current grant portfolio of over £70m and strong links to industry and policy makers, and as a member of the Energy Research Accelerator, Warwick’s energy-related research is a truly multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral activity.   Global Governance - A vision of the GRP

  Introduction

  Because our society is acquiring more global dimensions and governance of global problems is becoming ever more complex, global governance is an exciting and expanding field of inter-disciplinary research.Global governance is a subject of study that need not imply any particular theory or method. On the contrary, it is the richer for attracting and generating debate among researchers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. Below we explain how and why global governance is a contested term, and at the same time, identify some key features of global governance scholarship as it relates to this GRP. We explain why such scholarship is increasingly important and complex, and the types of activities which this GRP particularly seeks to support.

  Background

  The phrase ‘global governance’ was coined in the late 1980s and first became popularised through the Commission on Global Governance (1992-95).[1] Academic writings on ‘global governance’ – including some biting critiques of the concept – began to flow in the 1990s and have continued until the current day.

  Recognising A Contested Concept

  The use of the term ‘global governance’ does not suggest that this GRP endorses any normative vision of governance on a global scale. Rather scholars researching in this field come together because they recognise that there are increasing numbers of global issues where, as a matter of fact, governance efforts have evolved far beyond the traditional picture of individual States exclusively regulating their own distinct territories. ‘Global governance’ is thus less a framework of analysis and more a locus of critical debate.

  Towards a Working Definition

  Conceptions of ‘global governance’ in the academic literature are often vague and divergent. Nevertheless, for the purposes of defining the scope of coverage of this GRP, it is possible to set some parameters to the topic and identify some defining features of this area of study.‘Global’ applies to conditions that manifest themselves beyond individual countries and regions. ‘Global’ problems cross borders and in some cases envelop the planet as a whole.‘Governance’ refers broadly to constitutive practices and regulatory aspects of society: the formulation, application and review of rules, norms, standards and principles that are invoked to bring order and/or to effect change in a human collectivity. Combining the two terms, ‘global governance’ can refer to regulatory processes and constitutive practices that shape social relations on intercontinental and planetary scales.The Increasing Importance and Complexity of Scholarship in this Field

  The steep rise of global governance studies, particularly over the past twenty years, has been spurred by two broad trends:

  1. Global aspects of society are becoming more important.

  There is an increasingly long list of substantially globalised issues including climate change, employment patterns, energy provision, economic flows, food security, health and other social policy concerns, human rights, intercultural relations, new information and communications technologies, political mobilisations, trans-border production chains, and various developments in warfare.

  2. Regulation and Constitutive Practices in contemporary (more global) society involves more than the nation-state.

  ‘Governance’ includes but also extends beyond individual ‘governments’. Global governance is a term that recognises that a range of different actors in different fora play a part in regulating issues of global concern. These include:

  Global-level regulatory agencies, e.g. the International Monetary Fund or the World Health Organisation.National Governments - while the state today lacks a monopoly on governance, national governments retain major importance in global regulation, especially in widely prevalent (but under-researched) ‘trans-governmental networks’ of state officials, and other co-operative endeavours.Local authorities ‘below’ the state and regional apparatuses ‘above’ the state. These can also be relevant in the regulation of many global issues (e.g. fair trade cities, regional trading blocks etc.).Non-State actors such as business organisations and civil society actors can pay regulatory and constitutive roles in global affairs, for instance, as sponsors of global accounting standards or in creating regulatory frameworks for conflict-free diamonds.The complexity of global governance arrangements is compounded by the fact that frameworks for global policy are increasingly taking on ‘trans-sectoral’ or ‘multi-stakeholder’ forms that combine official, commercial and civil society inputs. Examples include the Global Reporting Initiative (on corporate social responsibility) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.It is therefore important to stress that ‘global’ describes what is governed more than where it is governed.Global governance also goes beyond visible regulatory institutions. Scholarship in relation to global governance issues therefore also considers the ‘governing’ impacts on global circumstances of discourses and other embedded social structures. This might include the disciplining effects of, and resistance to important ideational paradigms (e.g. neoliberalism); the use of the term ‘global’ itself as a hegemonic discourse; and the impact of deeper inequalities and structures of class, gender, space, nation, race, sexuality, age etc. on the way in which global affairs are governed.

  The Priorities of the Global Governance GRP

  The goal of GRP-GG is to foster longer-term interdisciplinary interactions between academics, at Warwick and other universities, that will give rise to important new understandings and insights into issues of global governance.To work towards this goal, the GRP will potentially co-ordinate and/or support any inter-disciplinary academic activity (events, research, dissemination etc.) that falls within our broad definition of global governance. We will prioritise activities that foster longer-term interactions between academics from different disciplines (as opposed to one-off events where no further interactions are envisaged)activities that create ‘impact’ e.g. the dissemination of existing inter-disciplinary research to non-academic audiencesdemonstrate how an inter-disciplinary approach will contribute significant added value to important issues of global concernhave shown enthusiasm for engaging as widely as possible with academics from other disciplines through long term engagement with the GRP and/or other relevant networks at Warwick and beyond (e.g. through the Queen Mary/ Monash/ Warwick alliances).have potential for generating longer-term and/or larger scale inter-disciplinary research projects, including those that could potentially form the basis of an external funding application
