The university has opted for a more focused research profile and is linking academic excellence and fundamental research to a social mission.

Utrecht Platform for Applied Data Science
Early 2017 the Utrecht Platform for Applied Data Science kicked off.The intelligent use of the massive amount of data nowadays available has become one of the main challenges of our modern society. Many problems may be solved by using the opportunities provided by the ‘datafication’ of our society. The Utrecht Platform for Applied Data Science UPADS addresses this need. It helps scientists in applying the latest and smartest technologies and methods in data science in their research of questions that are relevant to society.UPADS will bring together researchers and students from all fields. The aim of this new focus area is to form a community in which researchers communicate about their research, keep abreast of developments in data science, promote and develop teaching at various levels and, ultimately, collaborate in interdisciplinary research projects.UPADS connects researchers in substantive domains with researchers in more fundamental areas. It will accelerate the adaptation of new ideas and findings from fundamental data science in other disciplines working with data.Furthermore, UPADS will provide a wide range of data science courses on various levels for specialists, students and scientists within and outside the university.To achieve this, UPADS willBuild a data science community at Utrecht Science Park that will help researchers to get to know each other and to get informed about the latest developments in Data Science and opportunities in research and society.Start an active applied data science centre of excellence in which data scientists from different disciplines will interact with each other, with students and with third-party professionals. The centre will build and maintain an active network with relevant companies and institutions and invite them to articulate questions in the area of data science. The centre will help to translate these questions into viable research projects and to find the required funding.

Cultures, Citizenship and Human Rights
What is CCHR?Which cultural factors are shaping citizenship in Europe today? Utrecht University’s research focus area Cultures, Citizenship and Human Rights (CCHR) brings together first-rate scholars from the Humanities, Law and Governance, and the Social Sciences who have a common concern with identifying these factors. Detailed information on CCHR can be found here (pdf).Interaction of law and culture.Citizenship is established in a public arena where law and culture interact. It offers a forum where diverging values encounter each other, and where culture influences the way human rights are constituted both locally and globally. Who belongs? Who is protected by the law? Whose voice counts? These issues are subject to renegotiation and redefinition using both cultural and legal resources.Inclusive and resilient societies,The CCHR researchers at Utrecht University jointly aim to enlarge our insight into the convergence, but also the tensions between the cultural and the legal foundations of citizenship. This is vital to the understanding of inclusive and resilient societies. Cultures, Citizenship and Human Rights (CCHR) relates closely to Utrecht University’s strategic theme Institutions. CCHR is a continuation of the previous research focus areas Cultures & Identities and Conflicts & Human Rights.Qualitative research,CCHR has a distinctive emphasis on qualitative methods and an interpretational approach to the social and cultural world. We approach citizenship as an essentially contested, gendered and raced concept. Individuals are not primarily seen as behaving according to structures, formal organisations and patterned regulations. Instead, they are understood as actors who create meaning through agency, contestation, and materialisation. Such actor-based and artefact-based analyses enable the development of historical and cross-cultural comparisons of ideas, practices and objects.

Complex Systems Studies
Complex Systems Studies is a collaboration between scientists over the boundaries of disciplines, research groups and research institutes. It has been appointed as one of the focus areas of Utrecht University. Complex Systems Studies connects complex societal challenges with theories and models from the natural sciences. Additional to research it strives to educate students in complexity by offering a Master’s profile and summer school.The collaboration consists of more than 25 research groups and is supported by a steering committee of acknowledged researchers from a broad range of faculties of Utrecht University: Science, Veterinary Medicine, Geosciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Medicine and the Utrecht University School of Economics. Complex Systems studies collaborates with private and public partners like RIVM, TNO and IMC Financial Markets.

Future Food Utrecht
Future Food Utrecht was established early 2014 as a focus area of Utrecht University to bundle its research potential on the grand societal challenges regarding food. This focus area provides an integrated approach to address the development of sustainable future food concepts that have positive health effects and are acceptable and accessible for the human population. The themes Sustainable Innovation, Healthy Food and Smart Decisions are based on the existing expertise at Utrecht University in food related research and direct to the societal challenges.Future Food Utrecht harbors scientists with world-renowned reputations in their field of research and is an unique combination of expertise from several of Utrecht University’s faculties, the UMC Utrecht and accompanying industry that join their fundamental and strategic research capacities in the food domain. It is managed by a multidisciplinary and interfaculty group of scientists, representing 25 research groups divided over 7 faculties and represents a total annual research budget of 100 MEuro. Future Food Utrecht collaborates with private and public partners like Nutricia Research, RIVM, TNO, Immuno Valley, Bilthoven Biologicals, Unilever, Philips and Friesland Campina.

Game Research
Mission:How are people motivated to eat healthy? How are citizens involved in making decisions about their city? Such societal issues are far-reaching, but it is challenging is to keep people engaged and active. Games have the potential to contribute to grand societal issues. Games are designed experiences, players learn by doing, taking decisions and experiencing consequences in a safe and stimulating environment.It is our mission to employ games to help solving large societal challenges. Games are pre-eminently suitable to inform, motivate, appeal to emotion, and influence behavior. Games do that better than other types of media. The Utrecht Center for Game Research provides the multidisciplinary expertise that is necessary for top level research into developing and studying games: game mechanics, technologies, player-game interaction, as well as the context.Aim and ambition:Our aim is to contribute to global trends with regard to serious or applied games, i.e. games designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment. We invest not only in research, but also in a broad field of game-related education, as well as collaboration with industry and academia alike.By organising networking meetings, offering valorisation support, and allocating seed money grants to interdisciplinary projects, the Utrecht Center for Game Research works actively on the following three areas of ambition.1) Strengthening interdisciplinary research.We stimulate collaboration by bringing together researchers from different disciplines, within national as well as international contexts. Practiced collaboration, harmonisation of activities, and complementary areas of expertise will lead to higher quality research and education. We have established a university-wide infrastructure consisting of joint seminars and colloquia, and we coordinate grant applications. Our PhD candidates work across disciplines.2) Expanding research volume.We stimulate and support the writing of national (NWO, CLICKNL) and international (Horizon2020, ERC) research proposals. We encourage the formation of structurally embedded international research networks. Our ongoing collaborations with commercial partners will continue to attract new investments. The increase in visibility of our research and teaching activities has made the Utrecht Center for Game Research a natural partner in international initiatives. By organising international conferences, summer schools, and graduate programs, we attract the best and brightest (research) Master’s students and PhD candidates.3) Increasing impact.Combining complementary areas of expertise makes our research more relevant for both academia and society. With the support of the Utrecht Valorisation Center and the Research Support Offices, we continue to find practical applications of our academic knowledge to socially relevant research topics. We support joint output such as scientific publications on embedded research. The collective research groups form a recognised body of expertise and experience that defines an innovative research programme, putting us in a strong position to influence local, national, and international research agendas.

History and Philosophy of Science
At Utrecht University, researchers from all academic disciplines collaborate to generate a long-term, historical and philosophical perspective on current societal developments that are related to the production of scientific knowledge. Our research focuses on the history of the Western knowledge society since the 17th century, the philosophical foundations of knowledge, and analysis of fundamental scientific theories. We are also active in research and teaching about science policy, interdisciplinarity, and scientific integrity.Our researchers work in all departments of the university; they are united in the Descartes Centre for the History and Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities.We have a dedicated research master programme: History and Philosophy of Science.We also offer a variety of bachelor courses in history and philosophy of science.

Utrecht Bioinformatics Center
Our goal is to further strengthen and promote bioinformatics research within the Utrecht Life Sciences and Sustainability domains. Utrecht Bioinformatics Center(UBC) combines data from various sources and research methods to gain a better insight in the various cellular processes. By sharing knowledge and methods our approach allows for the integration of information at the level of DNA, genes, proteins and metabolites, thus yielding a comprehensive picture.The UBC community brings together Utrecht-based research groups each with a varied area of bioinformatics expertise, providing education for our life scientist of the future. By coordinating the High Performance Compute facility UBC provides access to a solid facility to compute the increased amount of data generated, for eighteen different research groups from UMC Utrecht, Utrecht University and the Hubrecht Institute.

Neuroscience and Cognition Utrecht
Neuroscience & Cognition Utrecht (NCU) brings all research activities in neuroscience and cognition at Utrecht University and University Medical Centre Utrecht together by fostering cross-disciplinary research into behavioural, cognitive and neurobiological processes underlying human collaboration, adaptation, ageing and neurological and psychiatric pathologies.NCU studies the neural circuitry in social cognition, communication and language use, and decision-making to better understand the conditions that promote human cooperation, trust and social responsibility.NCU examines the neural basis of memory formation, emotion, attention and the control of behaviour to understand the human ability (in healthy adults, ageing citizens and individuals suffering from neurological or neuropsychiatric disorders) to adapt to, and cope with changes in the social context as well as in cognitive and affective competences.NCU addresses basic research in perception and communication which has ramifications in clinical neurology (such as aphasia after stroke or rehabilitation therapies of cerebrovascular diseases) and psychiatry (such as perception in autism or schizophrenia).NCU thus aims to provide innovative fundamental science, which may impact efforts to build an economically and ecologically sustainable society, to support ageing people in remaining active contributors to society, and to prevent and remedy mental health problems that thwart individuals’ personal ambitions and cooperative participation in society.
