Social life at Queen Mary University of London
The Students’ Union’s Volunteering service offers hundreds of opportunities to help you build vital skills and experience, whilst giving you the chance to make a difference in the local and wider community. You should also check out First Thursdays, where many galleries stay open late on the first Thursday of every month and entry is free.Galleries very close to Queen Mary include the Whitechapel, the White Cube, Matt’s Gallery and the Wapping project.Museums include the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, the Museum of London Docklands and The Geffrye Museum, a wonderful museum dedicated to the history of interiors. There’s also the Ragged School Museum – where you can experience how Victorian children were taught – and the Sweet Tea House, which is dedicated to promoting Tibetan art.Many theatre productions start out in local theatres before transferring to the West End. Theatre Royal, Stratford East claims to be the liveliest theatre in London, regularly developing exciting new shows. Living on campus：One of the most striking things about Queen Mary is our campus. It’s the largest self-contained student campus in central London, and only 15 minutes by tube from the Oxford Street, Covent Garden and the rest of the West End. It’s very unusual for a London University – in fact we’re the only college in the University of London who can offer students a central site containing cafes, bar, restaurants, accommodation, gym, a student shop, bookshop, cashpoint and laundrette all on one central sit.
Sports：Taking part in sport at university is a great way to keep fit, make friends and generally have a good time. Queen Mary Students’ Union has over 40 sports clubs ranging from Aikido to Hockey, Fencing to Rowing.The Students’ Union has recently undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment, so in addition to the sports hall and squash court, there’s a brand new Health and Fitness Centre, QMotion. QMotion is home to a whole range of gym equipment including a cardiovascular zone, a resistance zone, and free weights. You can use these facilities with the expert advice of fully trained gym instructors. There’s also a women-only gym area, as well as yoga and pilates classes. Membership for the Health and Fitness Centre is at subsidised low rates for students.
London parks:London is one of the greenest cities in Europe, there are literally hundreds of parks. As well as the lovely Mile End Park, which is right next to the Mile End campus, Victoria Park is a short walk away. This is a huge, beautiful park with lots of open space ideal for picnics, a duck pond, bandstand, tennis courts and cricket green. In the summer months there are lots of open air concerts and festivals.

Queen Mary students are close to some of London’s best nightlife: the neighbouring areas of Shoreditch and Hoxton have between them gained a reputation for having the trendiest pubs, bars and clubs in the capital.
On our Mile End campus, we have Drapers Bar & Kitchen, which is home to some of our biggest and best on-campus events, including the legendary Hail Mary nights and Monday’s Calling.
If you are into comedy, Queen Mary is lucky enough to a top club near our Mile End campus. Try Lee Hurst’s Backyard Comedy Club in Bethnal Green, with some great deals, including £5 for a pizza if you book in advance.
