Program Description The three programs offer a seamless postgraduate study program in Information Security . The Graduate Certificate is equivalent to the first stage of the Graduate Diploma and the Graduate Diploma is equivalent to the first two stages of the Masters degree.
The development of the INTERNET, E-Commerce, Electronic Banking, EFTPOS, etc. has resulted in industry demand for trained professionals who can work in technical and managerial roles in addressing security risks in this new and exciting field.
The high level approach of the Graduate Certificate is designed to provide risk managers of companies and government organisations with information security needs, with a strong base of knowledge in the practice of information security and the issues and methods in the field.
The system level approach of the Graduate Diploma supplements the Graduate Certificate and is mainly aimed at system engineers and managers. It provides them with the principles underlying the components of information security systems as well as a sound understanding of the relationship between information security and related information technology disciplines.
The detailed approach of the Masters program is mainly suited to technical specialists, who are interested in the design and implementation details or critical evaluation of information security systems.
Graduates of the program will:
have a strategic and practical overview of the issues involved in the field of Information security (IS); develop a strong base of knowledge in the practice of IS; have the ability to evaluate IS risks in a practical context; have knowledge of the principles underlying the components of IS systems; have the ability t
o critically appraise IS solutions; have a sound understanding of the relationship between IS and IT disciplines; have a thorough understanding of the mathematical principles which underlie the components of IS; have a practical understanding of the issues in secure electronic commerce; and develop abilities for creative thinking, applied to the design of IS solutions at a system engineering level. Teaching Methods Classes are taught in a combination of lecture / seminar, tutorial, workshop, practical and laboratory sessions.
Assessment Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and may include examinations, essay / reports, oral class presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.
Mode and Duration Masters: three semesters full-time or six semesters part-time. This duration incorporates Graduate Certificate: one semester full-time or two semesters part-time; Graduate Diploma: one semester full-time or two semesters part-time.
Study Pathways Students with relevant qualifications and work experience can receive RCC by gaining exemption from some courses (subjects), at the discretion of the program leader.
Career Prospects Graduates of the program are expected to play a part in the management of public and private organisations where IS forms a part of organisational responsibilities. They can also fulfil consulting roles in the IT industry in a risk management setting. Graduates of the Masters degree will be technical specialists in the design provision and evaluation of IS systems and services in a wide variety of organisational setting.
Program Structure Each stage of the program requires the completion of 48 credit points of study
