International Working Woman's Day is celebrated on March 8 celebrating political and social awareness of the struggle of women worldwide. In many countries, the celebration has lost its political meaning and has become a holiday like either Mother's Day or Valentine's Day. The first International Working Woman's Day allegedly occurred in New York City on March 8, 1857 with garment workers protesting their poor working conditions and low pay. The protesters were said to have been attacked and dispersed by police. Many protests happened in following years until International Working Woman's Day was observed on February 28, 1909. Following the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City that killed over 140 garment workers, the holiday gained momentum. The U.N. declared International Working Woman's Day a holiday in 1975 and it is observed by many countries around the world.
