A weak old man lived with his son, his daughter-in-law, and his four-year-old grandson. His eyes couldn’t see clearly, his hands trembled, and his step was unstable.

Great Expectations is one of Charles Dickens’s best-known works. It is set in England in the early 1800s. Dickens uses Pip, the main character, to tell the story.
Pip lives with his older sister and her husband Joe. Pip’s sister seldom has a kind word to say, but Joe is a kind and simple man, who would rather die than see any harm come to Pip. Pip, who is seven years old when the story begins, is in a misty field of tombs when a man appears and frightens him. Mist(薄雾)is a symbol of danger and uncertainty in Great Expectations. Classic novels often have symbols which add interest, tension or deeper meaning to the text to guide readers.
When Pip is about eighteen years old, a very generous stranger gives Pip a lot of money, which sets him free from financial worries. Pip makes the sudden decision to move from Kent, which is a constant reminder of his shabby beginnings, to the bright lights of London. However, money and education have changed him. Before long he develops the shortcomings of being shallow and having prejudice, even against his old companions. Pip dislikes it when Joe comes to visit him. He has rigid(固执的)ideas of what it means to be civil and to be a gentleman, and is embarrassed by Joe because he doesn’t fit these.
Pip is determined to become a gentleman and winning Estella’s love. Estella is a beautiful girl, and for Pip, she is a symbol of education and money. What it really means to be a gentleman is an important theme in Great Expectations. Is an educated person with a lot of money a gentleman? Or is a gentleman somebody who is kind and good to his friends?
By the end of the novel, Pip has changed a lot. He learns that wealth does not buy happiness and that friends are more important than a fancy education. Amber, 16, has been in four foster-care homes(寄养家庭)in two years. Now she is getting a makeover(精心打扮)at the mall to be filmed in a television station in Boise, Idaho, which may help her find a permanent family that does the ordinary things families do — go on picnics, eat out, and watch movies together.
   Ten years ago, teenagers such as Amber were so hard to place with adoptive families that hardly anyone tried. If you talked about finding a home for an older child, that meant the kid was 7 or 8. But today, people are increasingly willing to adopt those who are 9 years old or older, and most experts believe the phenomena will continue.
Of course, the teens often need as much encouragement and advice as the future parents do. In St. Louis, Missouri, Project Teen Plus provides a support group to help teenagers talk about their fears and doubts about being adopted, for many of them have lived in institutions so long that they have no idea what life in a family is like. And teens often have mixed feelings about joining a new family. Many teens in foster care are worried that being adopted means having to reject their birth families. One adoption expert suggests finding out the reasons for teenagers’ resistance and offering the choice of remaining in touch with their birth families after entering adoptive homes.
The key to success seems to be careful preparation and patience of both the teen and the family. So a teenager usually spends six to nine months with a future family before an adoption is finally decided. For example, a couple decided to open their home to Michael, 17. For ten months, the couple and the boy struggled to get to know and accept one another. But Michael’s 18th birthday brought about change. The big event was not only his first birthday with his adoptive family but also the first time he had ever been given birthday gifts and a cake. For Michael’s new parents, the rewards have been great. “You’re not just helping someone else,” says Father. “You’re making a decision to grow as a family.”

November is Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆症)Awareness Month in the United States. Alzheimer’s is a frightening disease, not only for those who suffer from memory loss, but also for their loved ones. But researchers in California say a new way of treating the disease is showing promise for reversing some of that memory loss. The new treatment combines western medicine with eastern philosophy — ideas rooted in Asian religions.
Dr. Dale Bredesen is with the Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research at UCLA. He says nine of ten patients suffering from Alzheimer’s noted improvements in their memory. He says the traditional use of only one treatment just did not work with many patients. The new therapy(疗法)treats the whole patient, not just parts of the patient. “They have either taken a single drug to try with Alzheimer’s, which has been a failure repeatedly, or they have tried without any background, simply saying, ‘Okay, try exercise, try changing your diet,’ these sorts of things, and there has not been any way to understand how these things contribute to the disease.”
According to Dr. Bredesen, there is a constant balance of the brain remembering and forgetting. Many things, including a person’s lifestyle, can create an imbalance in brain activity, which can lead to memory loss. Dr. Bredesen creates an individualized treatment for each patient. He does this by taking images of their brain, testing their blood and asking many questions about their daily life. During the treatments, subjects were told to eat more fish, avoid carbohydrates and processed foods, and take vitamin B12, D3 and fish oil. They also practiced yoga(瑜伽), sat quietly for 20 minutes twice each day and slept more.
Dr. Bredesen describes this new therapy as combining western understanding of the human body with the eastern method of looking at the whole patient. For the nine patients whose memory improved, it usually happened within three to six months. The 10th patient was too far along in the disease for any improvement to be observed.
The UCLA center is now working with 30 additional patients as it moves to expand its research. The researchers say they followed some patients up to two and a half years and the memory improvements remained.

—语法结构或词汇方面应用基本准确,些许错误主要是因尝试较复杂语法结构或词汇所致。
—应用简单的语句间连接成分,使全文结构紧凑。达到了预期的写作目的。
16~20分 
第三档 基本完成了试题规定的任务。
—虽漏掉一些内容,但覆盖所有主要内容。

One Possible Version
As time goes on, the New Year has come. I often think what my school life will be like in 2015.
It will be only several months before I take part in the college entrance exams, so I will have to be very busy with my lessons. Longing for studying computer science in a famous university, I must work harder to make my dream come true.
There is no doubt that I must strike a balance between work and rest. I will take more regular exercise, such as running and some ball games. Besides, I will also enjoy reading and playing the piano. Not only will they broaden my horizon, but also be good ways of relaxation.
As Napoleon Hill puts it, “Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.” I do believe my school life of 2015 will be much richer and more colorful.

W: Thanks, Daniel. Hello, everyone. I’m honored to be here with you tonight. The story I’m going to share with you tonight is about Carla Delgado, a ten-year-old girl from Miami, Florida. Carla was born with only one leg, but she didn’t let that stop her. She learned how to push herself in a wheelchair by the age of three, and she never let anyone else do it. At the age of four, she was able to walk with a special walking stick. One year later, she started kindergarten, and she could run faster than most of her classmates. She told everyone that they shouldn’t feel sorry for her or treat her differently. She made friends easily. Although it was not very convenient for her to play football or rugby, she was the star of the basketball team when she was in Grade Three. For the last two years, Carla has been travelling to schools around the country. She talks to students about how hard she has worked, and about the importance of respect. She also talks to other disabled children and gives them hope and inspiration. She always tells them, “Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re different.”
