　　Taiwan’s universities have been steadily climbing to greater global prominence in recent years, establishing the country’s capital as one of Asia’s leading higher education hubs. Taipei is home to no less than eight universities ranked among the world’s best in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, led by the nation’s flagship public institute, National Taiwan University (NTU) at joint 68th in the world.

　　Renowned worldwide for its high-tech industry, Taipei has also become increasingly popular with travelers. Its attraction is something akin to that of cities like Hong Kong, in combining all the attractions of fast-paced modern city life with the appeal of more traditional cultural elements.

　　With relatively low tuition fees and living costs, Taipei also has one of the highest scores in the Affordability category, of the QS Best Student making it well worth considering if you’re on a tight budget.

　　Taipei features at 10th in the new Student View category of the index, showing that students are enjoying their experience of the city and are often keen to stay after graduation. When asked to name the best things about studying in Taipei, one respondent to our student survey summarized: “Inclusion. Diversity. Friendliness.” Another commented, “The local people are friendly and helpful to foreigners.”

　　QS Best Student Cities ranking: 22nd

　　Like other Australian cities, capital Canberra scores very well in the Student Mix category of the QS Best Student Cities index, reflecting its large and internationally diverse student population. As the home of Australia’s highest-ranked university, Australian National University (ANU) – 22nd in the latest QS World University Rankings® – it’s unsurprising to find the city has proven attractive to students from around the world.

　　Canberra’s second strongest score is in the Desirability category, which draws on a range of sources to assess both actual quality of life and student demand. While it may be one of Australia’s few major settlements which is not within walking distance of the beach, Canberra nonetheless has plenty of natural attractions – including its own (man-made) lake right in the city center, and numerous nature reserves all around.

　　Respondents to the student survey used to compile this year’s edition of the index praised Canberra’s safe, relaxed and welcoming environment, while also highlighting opportunities for those interested in national politics and government. One commented, “Moving from Sydney where everything is so chaotic and work-focused, Canberra definitely has the balance of fun and work.”

　　Barcelona offers one of Europe’s most appealing environments in which to live and study – sunny climate, beaches, renowned cuisine, a rich artistic and cultural legacy, cosmopolitan city center and of course, a legendary party scene.

　　It is also home to two of Spain’s most prestigious universities, the University of Barcelona (UB) and Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, both of which rank in the global top 210 of the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, as well as several other internationally esteemed institutions.

　　The city’s highest score in the QS Best Student Cities index is in the Affordability category –while Barcelona is one of the most popular and visited cities in Europe, living costs remain reasonable compared to cities such as London and Paris. Tuition fees are a little higher than those in fellow Western European countries such as France or Germany, but still relatively low, giving Barcelona an overall affordability rating in the top 50.

　　Barcelona also scores well in the Desirability and Student Mix categories of the index, reflecting its reputation as one of Europe’s most happening cities, and most appealing destinations for international students. 　　QS Best Student Cities ranking: Joint 23rd

　　The UK’s third best student city after London and Edinburgh, Manchester ranks joint 23rd with Barcelona in the QS Best Student Cities index this year, up 13 places from last year. This strong position is due largely to the world-class universities in Manchester, as well as a fun-packed student culture that gives London a run for its money.

　　Located in the north west of England, Manchester is especially well known for its music scene, which has produced big-name bands such as The Smiths, Joy Division and Oasis. Today its numerous venues continue to be a central part of the UK music circuit, welcoming globally successfully acts and nurturing new talent. More generally, arts, culture and excellent nightlife are all very much in good supply, as are opportunities to explore the rich history of this part of the UK. Manchester played a central role in the industrial revolution – and this can be seen today in the imposing old textile factories and warehouses still dotted around the city.

　　Three universities in Manchester feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, the most notable of which is the University of Manchester, which stands at 29th in the world.

　　Manchester’s lively student scene earned it a score in the top 30 in the new Student View category, reflecting the great student experience on offer. One respondent to our student survey commented: “It's a big enough city with plenty to see and do, but small and inclusive enough that there is still a sense of community among everyone. It's very multicultural and welcomes anyone and everyone.” Another summed up: “The city is wonderful, I don't want to leave. Plus the people are so friendly and the nightlife is amazing: best city I’ve been to.”

　　QS Best Student Cities ranking: 25th

　　Shanghai, China’s largest city by population, is not only the world’s busiest container port; it is also a huge global center for finance, commerce, culture – and also education.

　　Six universities in Shanghai feature within the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, led by Fudan University at 43rd in the world and Shanghai Jiao Tong University at 61st.

　　Much like other thriving Asian cities such as Hong Kong and Seoul, Shanghai is often described in terms of contrasts – old and new, East and West, well-preserved traditions alongside rapid development – and there’s certainly more than enough to make each day different, however much time you spend here. The city lines the banks of the Yangtze River, where it meets the East China Sea, and has a striking, and growing, skyline of skyscrapers. The Shanghai Tower, completed late in 2013, is the tallest structure of any kind in China and the second tallest building in the world after Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

　　Back at street level, you’ll find buzzing marketplaces, ancient temples, cuisines from around the world, theaters and galleries, all interwoven with a rich and interesting history. While living costs are fairly high – Shanghai is now rated the sixth most expensive city in the Mercer Cost of Living Survey – this is offset by relatively reasonable tuition fees.

　　Shanghai is up 14 places in this year’s Best Student Cities index, reflecting its strong scores in the Rankings and Employer Activity categories, showing that the city’s prestigious universities are viewed favorably by graduate employers. It also comes third in the new Student View indicator, showing that students are certainly enjoying their time in Shanghai. One survey respondent commented, “It’s an international city, which is great because you get to meet people from all around the world and get to know the different cultures”, while another praised the “abundant cultural life.”
