Many also have widespread practical experience in consultancy and act as advisors to prominent national and international organisations.As a postgraduate researcher you will usually be assigned at least two academic supervisors with relevant specialist subject knowledge. One will be your main supervisor and the others will be co-supervisors. They will provide support and encouragement, challenge your ideas, offer advice on training and development, review your progress and provide guidance and feedback on your work.Supervisors draw on their own experience to guide your work, give encouragement and advise you on the direction of your research. They will be with you from the development of your research plan, through the creation of your thesis to preparing you for the viva – the final stage of your PhD.

  Section profiles:At the University of Leeds our research aims to help to create socially, environmentally and economically sustainable cities. Our researchers play leading roles in national and international cities research, working on a variety of projects in a number of areas including:examining the resilience of infrastructure systems,low-carbon city systems,retaining local value,non-exploitative finance and the links between financial governance and inequality,justice and inequality in cities,‘big data’ in cities,the co-production of research with local stakeholdersAt the heart of our impressive research and funding portfolio are large grants and cross-disciplinary centres funded by the EPSRC, ESRC and NERC.   Our vision is to make Leeds a world-leading centre for interdisciplinary research into culture. Through our Cultural Institute we want to ensure that the significance of culture in contributing urgent answers to complex and difficult questions facing the human race is appropriately understood and embraced across the University.The Cultural Institute has three main aims: to increase pioneering research collaborations with our partners, to widen cultural engagement and participation and to create more opportunities to extend the knowledge and build the skills of our students.The Cultural Institute brings together academics and partners from across the cultural sector and beyond.Key strengths:From performing and preserving Jewish music, theatre and artwork thought lost as a result of the Holocaust to demonstrating the benefit of participating in contemporary dance for older people; the Cultural Institute can bring together partners from a variety of research fields and industries to find solutions to complex challenges.Facts and figures:Leeds is recognised as a global centre of research and teaching excellence in the Arts and Humanities, regularly ranked by QS in the world’s top 100, with world-class archives and facilities.There are 200 staff associated with the culture theme at the University.Our pioneering DARE collaboration with Opera North was awarded a £2m grant from the Arts Council to develop a CPD programme in fundraising for UK arts professionals, and a National Summer School in Arts Fundraising and Leadership, the only one of its kind in Europe.Working with Yorkshire Dance, Biological Science researchers have illuminated the health benefits of dance for young people and older adults in Leeds.Since 2012 our faculties of Arts and Performance, Visual Arts and Communications have worked with over 780 third, public and private sector individuals, companies and organisations.We are creating the cultural entrepreneurs of the future through our programmes of work-based professional development.Major projectsYorkshire Year of the TextileResearch, artists’ commissions and public engagement activities to celebrate Yorkshire’s rich cultural heritage.Performing violence.

  Climate

  Climate change and its impact on society and ecosystems is a pressing global concern, demanding solutions developed by a community of researchers who work together across a range of disciplines.The University of Leeds undertakes more world-leading climate research than any other UK institution. Leeds has more than 150 academic staff working on climate related research with £100m in research income and 40 papers published in Nature and Science between 2010 and 2015. Leeds provided five lead authors for the last Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment and was one of very few worldwide institutions that had lead authors on all four IPCC reports that made up its overall fifth assessment of climate change.The Priestley International Centre for Climate established in 2016, is a major investment (£6.82m over five years) by the University of Leeds to grow interdisciplinary research to underpin robust and timely climate solutions.Key strengths:Academics at the University of Leeds are using world-class expertise and interdisciplinary capability to deliver climate research with reach into every continent worldwide. The study of the extreme atmospheres on bodies such as Saturn's moon Titan will further help our understanding of the gases, aerosols and hazes in the Earth’s atmosphere which contributed to air pollution.Met Office academic partnership,A cluster of research excellence that brings together the Met Office and institutions who are among the leading UK Universities in weather and climate science (University of Exeter, University of Leeds, University of Oxford and University of Reading) through a formal collaboration to advance the science and skill of weather and climate prediction.

  Energy Leeds is working to tackle one of the greatest challenges of the 21st Century – maintaining clean, secure and affordable supplies as part of a sustainable energy future.The University has a vibrant community of energy researchers and is equipped to tackle the energy challenge by drawing on scientific, technical, environmental, economic, political and societal/behavioural expertise. Their research informs UK policy development and strategies of public, private and third sector organisations.Centre for Industrial Energy, Materials and Products.Working closely with government and industry, the Centre for Industrial Energy, Materials and Products (CIE-MAP) conducts research to identify all the opportunities along the product supply chain that ultimately deliver a reduction in industrial energy use. CIE-MAP brings together the four leading UK universities of Bath, Cardiff, Leeds and Nottingham Trent with a range of expertise in engineering, economics, psychology, design, political science and governance. Funded by the Research Council’s Energy Programme, CIE-MAP forms one of six centres focuses on reducing energy demand in the UK.EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Bioenergy.Bioenergy from wood, waste, agricultural residues and energy crops is a major global energy renewable source. However, there are challenges concerning technical performance, cost effectiveness, sustainable production, food security and biodiversity. It is also the biggest land and water user (*Defra Food Statistics Pocketbook, 2015),worldwide a billion people are malnourished yet the prevalence of obesity nearly doubled between 1980 and 2008.,in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework the impact of food science research at Leeds was highly ranked, with all work being rated as internationally excellent or world leading,the University is home to both the UK champion for Global Food Security and two of the most highly cited food scientists in the world (top 1%),we have strong research links with top ranking universities in Asia, Africa, America Australasia and Europe, including a strategic alliance with Jiangsu University, which has established a UK-China Joint Laboratory on Remote and Non-invasive, Non-destructive sensing for Food Quality and Safety,the development of novel intervention tools ‘myfood24’ and ‘MyMealMate’ has provided new insights into diet and behaviour change,we have 117 members of staff working across the theme.

  Water@leeds is one of the largest interdisciplinary centres for water research in any university in the world, encompassing expertise from across the physical, biological, chemical, social and economic sciences and engineering as well as the arts.Key strengths:water@leeds has excellent links with industry and government and a track record of collaborative research and development, knowledge transfer and joint innovation.
