All applicants are required to apply online. Save your work frequently and print a copy for your records. You must complete all required fields and uploads prior to submission.Any additional supporting documents that need to be sent by mail must include an Application Materials Cover Sheet. All supporting materials must be received before your application can be reviewed.Applicants for the Master of Music degree must have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent upon enrollment. Professional Studies Diploma applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree or conservatory diploma; however, a master’s degree is recommended.See below for additional information regarding submission of transcripts and recommendations.

Application:Undergraduate program applicants should complete the Common App online application. Graduate program applicants should complete The New School's online application.

Official Transcripts
Undergraduates: All applicants must provide official high school and/or college transcripts. If you are currently in school, submit transcripts for all coursework taken to date. Applicants who have attended several high schools can submit only the graduating school’s official transcript as long as all prior coursework is reflected on that transcript.
Graduates: Official transcripts must be provided for every undergraduate or graduate institution attended for course credit. We will expect an official transcript from each institution listed in the Academic History section of the application. Although not required, an unofficial copy of your transcript(s) may be uploaded with your application.
Transfer Applicants: Transfer applicants who have completed fewer than 24 college credits (on a semester system) must submit high school transcript(s) in addition to college transcripts. Credits for music courses taken elsewhere are not automatically transferable, although credit may be given toward a Mannes degree pending the results of the entrance test, interview, and transcript evaluation.
By Mail: Official transcripts should have an original signature or a raised university seal, and must be in a sealed envelope that has been signed or stamped by the issuing university’s registrar or records office. Applicants can either send official transcripts with an Application Materials Cover Sheet or request that institutions send transcripts directly to The New School. See “Mailing Address for Supplemental Materials” below for our mailing address.
Electronic Transcripts (U.S./Domestic Institutions Only): The New School accepts electronic transcripts only from our approved vendors. The New School’s approved vendors, in order of preference, are

We do not accept electronic transcripts sent directly by a student or school offices. Note: All international academic credentials must be submitted as indicated in the International Academic Credentials sections below.
High School Equivalency (For Undergraduates): For GED, TASC, and HiSET, send official test score results by postal mail.
Homeschooling (For Undergraduates): For homeschooling, send an official transcript from your sponsoring high school or state homeschool association. Homeschooled applicants must provide the equivalent of a high school transcript, with course or subject titles, duration of study for each title, content of study for each title, and an assessment of performance or “grade.” Preferably, the courses completed at home are part of a curriculum developed and evaluated by a nationally recognized diploma-granting organization or agency. If an official transcript from a state homeschool association or sponsoring public high school is not available, homeschooled students must submit GED, TASC, or HiSET exam results. Individual homeschooled transcripts with date of completion do not suffice as official proof of graduation. In addition, homeschooled applicants must submit standardized test scores from either the SAT or ACT. Homeschooled applicants can submit two standardized subject test results in lieu of the SAT or ACT.
International Academic Credentials: All transcripts not written in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
International Academic Credentials with Transfer Credits: Applicants who attended postsecondary institutions outside of the United States are required to have their transcript(s) evaluated by World Education Services (WES), or by another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). A course-by-course evaluation must be prepared for each transcript.
If using WES, visit www.wes.org for instructions and to begin the application process. The “Required Documents” section will explain what to send. If you request your report online, search for “The New School” when selecting our institution. WES will send your completed evaluation directly to The New School.
If using another NACES provider, follow instructions for that provider. Mailed evaluations and translations should be sent to the mailing address provided for supporting materials. Applicants forwarding these sealed documents should include an Application Materials Cover Sheet.

Recommendation Letter:Letters of recommendation related to academic experience are required for all applicants—one for undergraduate applicants, two for graduate applicants. Recommenders can submit recommendations online; instructions are included with the online application. If preferred, the recommendation form can instead be sent by mail in a signed, sealed envelope. To send the form by mail, download the PDF recommendation form found in the online application, complete your personal information, save the form, and forward it to the recommender for completion and submission. Applicants can also send signed and sealed recommendations to the Office of Admission using an Application Materials Cover Sheet.

Prescreening (if applicable):In order to be considered for a live audition, applicants for piano, violin, cello, flute, and voice concentrations must submit a prescreening recording. Applicants for the composition concentration must submit scores for review. Please visit Auditions for details. You must submit prescreening materials electronically using Acceptd when you apply online. Prescreening recordings must be submitted with the application by the November 1 application deadline for the spring term or the December 1 application deadline for the fall term (April 1 for late auditions). Mannes College Division and Mannes Preparatory Honors program students are exempt from the prescreening requirement.

Live Audition:Live auditions (on campus and regional) in Cello, Composition, Flute, Piano, Violin, and Voice require submission of prescreening recordings at Acceptd. Auditions in these areas will be confirmed after review of the submitted prescreening recordings. Prescreening recordings must be received by the application deadline of December 1 (April 1 for Late Review). Prescreening recordings received after this deadline will be reviewed at the discretion of the Admissions Office. Visit the Audition Requirements website for specific audition requirements for your instrument for more information on prescreening requirements.
Mannes accepts auditions in three different formats. Personal auditions are encouraged for all applicants.On-Campus Audition: Main auditions are held at Mannes from February 26 through March 6. Visit Auditions for information about on-campus auditions and a preliminary audition weekend schedule.Regional Audition: Regional auditions are offered at sites in Asia, Europe, and other locations during the months of December and January. The auditions are audio- and video-recorded, then brought back to campus for the faculty to evaluate. Please note that regional auditions are not available for orchestral conducting or spring enrollment. Regional audition dates will be listed on the Auditions website.

Test Scores
SAT and ACT (For Undergraduates): The New School does not require submission of SAT or ACT scores for applications to be considered complete. Should you feel your SAT or ACT test scores are beneficial to your application, you may submit them for our consideration. Homeschool applicants must submit standardized test scores from either the SAT or the ACT. Homeschool applicants may submit two standardized subject test results in lieu of the SAT. The institution code is 2828.
TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE: The New School does not require TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores for applicants:
Who have attended a secondary school for a minimum of three years where English is the primary language of instruction
Who have successfully completed two full semesters of non-ESL college-level expository writing
Who have earned a four-year degree from a U.S. college/university or from a university where English is the primary language of instruction (minimum of three years attendance)
Upon review of your application, the Office of Admission may require you to submit an English Language Proficiency test score.
Arrange for the testing service to send your test scores directly to The New School using the institution codes listed above. We accept scores for tests taken within the past two years. If your scores are older, you must retake the test. For more information and/or to locate testing centers, visit the TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE websites. Allow 10 to 12 weeks for official test scores to arrive at Mannes; schedule your test accordingly.
Current Mannes students whose first language is not English; who are enrolled in the Mannes NEXT Diploma program or the Professional Studies Diploma program; and who are applying for admission to the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma, or Master of Music degree program are required to submit TOEFL scores and take the Mannes English Placement Exam.

English Placement Exam
All applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Mannes English Placement Test, which assesses reading comprehension, writing ability, and listening and speaking skills.
The Mannes English Placement Test is taken at Mannes during audition week. It consists of a grammar test, an essay on a topic chosen by Mannes, and an oral (face-to-face) interview. Mannes has found this test to be a better method than standardized tests for assessing students' English language level and ability to succeed in their classes. Mannes uses the results of these tests and the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE in deciding whether students' English language skills qualify them to attend Mannes.

Applicants to certain programs and majors are required to take a musicianship placement examination and sit for a personal interview during the audition period. The Office of Admission will notify you if you are required to take the musicianship exam.

In any given term, a student can apply to only one department or program within The New School. Applicants who file more than one application in a given semester will be required to withdraw one of the applications, and application fees will not be refunded.

Applications become complete and ready for review once all required items have been received by the Office of Admission. You can check your application status online at the Admission Hub.Allow at least 14 days from the date you submitted your application for items to be matched and shown as received on the Hub. Applicants are responsible for following up with schools and recommenders to confirm that items have been sent.The Office of Admission will periodically notify applicants by email if their file is missing any documents and again when their file is complete for review. These notifications are sent to the email address provided in the online application.
