We sometimes say the lion is "the king of the jungle" because it is stronger and more dangerous than the other animals. It can run faster than most other animals and it can hunt the best. The lion is the highest animal in the land food chain. It can run faster than most other sea animals. It can also use its big teeth to catch other sea animals and eat them.

What is at the top of the world's food chain? People are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the cleverest. We could not run faster than most animals, so we invented cars and now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than a lion, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.

People's inventions are clever, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago in Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild wolves(狼). The wild wolves usually eat wild rabbits. But in recent years, the number of wild rabbits is becoming bigger and bigger because the number of wild wolves is getting smaller and smaller. Much of the grassland became desert because it was seriously destroyed by the rabbits.

Remember that we are a part of the food chain, so we are in danger, too! If we protect animals, we are protecting ourselves.

  56. How many kinds of animal food chains are mentioned in the passage?

  A. Two. B. Three. C. Four.

  57. Why are people at the top of the world's food chain?

  A. Because they can use gun.

  B. Because they are the biggest.

  C. Because they are the cleverest.

  58. In what way do we say people's inventions can be sometimes dangerous?

  A. They can kill a lot of wild wolves.

  B. They can destroy the food chain.

  C. They can destroy the grassland.

  59. Much of the grassland became desert because it was seriously destroyed by_ __.

  A. the lions B. the wild wolves C. the wild rabbits

  60. What is the best title of the passage?

  A. People's inventions. B. Desert C. Food chain

  D

  判断正(A)误(B)

Do you use your right hands more or left hands more? Very few of us use both of our hands well. Most people use right hands. Only about five people of a hundred use left hands. New-born babies can take things with either of their hands, but in about two years, they like to use their right hands. Scientists don't know why this happens. They've studied it. They think our animal ancestors used their right hands, this may not be true. Monkeys are our closest relations in the animal world. Scientists have found that monkeys like to use one of their hands more than the other ---- but it can be either hand. There are as many right-handed monkeys as the left-handed ones. Next time you visit the zoo and watch the monkeys carefully. You'll see that some of them will use their right hands and others will use their left hands. But men use their right hands better and this makes life difficult for the left-handed ones. We live in a right-handed world.

Some scientists have found out that more of successful people are left-handed, but they don't know why. But they are working hard to discover the secret.

  61. Very few of us use both of our hands.

  62. About 5% people use their left hands.

  63. The left-handed live easily because most people use their left hands.

  64. New-born babies use their right hands more.

  65. Scientists don't know the reason why more of successful people are left-handed.
