Key To Keep The Jazz Hot

It's not easy running a jazz club anywhere at anytime, much less in largely suburban New Jersey, in what are hardly the best economic times.

The audience for the music, while dedicated, is small. Jazz accounted for only 3 percent of recorded music sales in the year 2003, according to Nielsen SoundScan1, which tracks retail sales nationwide.

Being next to New York cuts both ways, say musicians, promoters and patrons. While more people are aware of and exposed to the music , a New Jersey jazz fan working in Manhattan can stay in the city and choose from over a dozen places to hear music nearly any night of the week. On the plus side, the northern half of the state can listen to WBGO- FM2 , an award-winning public radio station devoted exclusively to jazz , which frequently announces local performances. And many professional jazz musicians live in Essex, Bergen and Houston countries, ranging from respected sidemen, and studio players to better known leaders and stars.

" It is damn difficult,"said Enrico Granafei, one of Trumpets'owners. Mr. Granafei, who was born in Italy in 1952 , runs Trumpets with his wife, Massari. They took over the business in 1999, three year after another couple failed to revive it. Trumpets was founded in ...

New Zealand Of The White Cloud

With its primeval forests, mighty snowcapped peaks, gigantic fjords and grumbling volcanoes, it's no wonder the makers of The Lord Of The Rings films decided to shoot the trilogy in New Zealand.

Rugged ranger-types can relive The Fellowship Of The Ring by scaling forbidding mountain passes or crossing volcanic moonscapes towards the cracks of doom2. For more adrenaline3 highs there's an unbeatable4 choice of good value activities, from white water rafting and jet boat rides to bungee-jumping5 and skydiving.

For more homely Hobbit6 types, NZ has many other attractions to enjoy — rambling countryside, a glorious coastline and plenty of sedate places to sit and enjoy the amazing views. And then there 's the terrific cuisine and wine.

With two weeks or more, a good way to see the country is to start in Auckland on the North Island, then drive to Wellington, crossing by ferry to the South Island. Take in the breathtaking scenery around Queenstown before flying home from Christchurch.

There's too much to see beyond Auckland and too much to justify spending too much time in the city. So head south to Waitomo. Hiding beneath the hilly area are the haunting Waitomo Glowworm Caves. D...

2019年6月英语六级翻译练习:写作

Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown. Quite the opposite, just as the cook has to undergo a particular training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at hisdesk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose is—schoolwork, matters of business, or purely social communication.

You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing, and the more rewarding.

There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service ofthat rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letter writing with no more than a quick note to work from. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves.

We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. It would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put intomails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. W...

2019年6月英语六级翻译练习:联邦快递

Federal Express is a company that specializes in rapid overnight delivery of high-priority packages. The first company of its type, Federal Express was founded by the youthful Fred Smith in 1971, when he was only28 years old. Smith had actually developed the idea for the rapid delivery service in a term paper for an economics class when he was a student at Yale University.

The term paper received a less-than-stellar grade because of the infeasibility of the project that Smith had outlined. The model that Smith proposed had never been tried; it was a model that was efficient to operate but at the same time very difficult to institute.

Smith achieved efficiency in his model by designing a system that was separate from the passenger system and could, therefore, focus on how to deliver packages most efficiently. His strategy was to have his own planes so that he could create his own schedules and to ship all packages through the centralized hub city of Memphis, a set-up which resembles the spokes (轮辐) on the wheel of a bicycle. With this combination ofhis own planes and hub set-up, he could get packages anywhere in the United States overnight.

What made Smith’s idea difficult to institute was the fact that the entire system had to be created before the company could begin operations. He ...

2019年6月英语六级翻译练习:科学

The word science is heard so often in modern times that almost everybody has some notion of its meaning. On the other hand, its definition is difficult for many people. The meaning of the term is confused, but everyone should understand its meaning and objectives. Just to make the explanation as simple as possible, suppose science is defined as classified knowledge (facts).

Even in the true sciences distinguishing fact from fiction is not always easy. For this reason great care should be taken to distinguish between beliefs and truths. There is no danger as long as a clear difference is made between temporary and proved explanations. For example, hypotheses and theories are attempts to explain natural phenomena. From these positions the scientist continues to experiment and observe until they are proved or discredited. The exact status of any explanation should be clearly labeled to avoid confusion.

The objectives of science are primarily the discovery and the subsequent understanding of the unknown. Man cannot be satisfied with recognizing that secrets exist in nature or that questions are unanswerable; he must solve them. Toward that end specialists in the field of biology and related fields of interest are directing much of their time and energy.

  Actually, two basic approaches lea...

2019年6月英语六级翻译练习:生活标准

The "standard of living" of any country means the average person's share of the goods and services which the country produces. A country's standard of living, therefore, depends first and foremost on its capacity to produce wealth. "Wealth" in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy: "goods" such as food and clothing, and "services" such as transport and entertainment.

A country's capacity to produce wealth depends upon many factors, most of which have an effect on one another. Wealth depends to a great extent upon a country's natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on. Some regions of the world are well supplied with coal and minerals, and have a fertile soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of these things, and some regions possess none of them. The U. S. A is one of the wealthiest regions of the world because she has vast natural resources within her borders, her soil is fertile, and her climate is varied. The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.

Next to natural resources comes the ability to turn them to use. China is perhaps as well off as the U. S. A. in natural resources, but suffered for many years from civil and external war...

  Sex And The City-state

On a small downtown stage, two men kiss passionately. Visitors to a nearby museum look at provocative nudes on the wall, while readers scour local magazines for the best place to buy sex toys. Think you're in New York? Guess again. This is Singapore, the famously uptight city-state better known for banning films like Eyes Wide Shut and Lolita, 2 not to mention magazines like Playboy3.

There's not exactly a free -love revolution going on, but Singapore has in recent years loosened its restrictions on sex in the arts. And more freedom is on the horizon: this month the government's Censorship Review Committee ( CRC) is expected to issue a report further easing the guidelines governing what Singaporeans read, watch and listen to. That means it may not be long before Singaporeans can enjoy Cosmopolitan magazine, and maybe even racy TV shows like HBO's Sex and the City.

The new rules are part of Singapore 's efforts to bolster its art scene . In 2002, it opened a world-class performing-arts center, the Esplanade -Theatres on the Bay, which has quickly become a visual icon and is tackling ambitious programs like the 19-hour opera The Peony Pavilion4 .

Singapore still has a long way to go to become a true bastion of artistic freed...
