With SARS gradually passing its peak, more and more people take off their gauze masks. Theyfeel released and have more freedom to breathe in fresh air. However, a certain number ofpeople have restored their bad habit and start to spit everywhere. Now and then, whether inthe street, or on the bus, or in city gardens, we will see some people, the fine ladies andgentlemen, spitting without feeling a bit ashamed as shown in the picture. When shown the "nospitting!" sign, they just turn a blind eye to it. Still worse, people around have to be on guardagainst the sudden at tack of "spits hot" from the spitters.
Spitting is a terrible habit. For one thing, it is entirely uncivilized. The world has entered the 21st century and human civilization has reached a more advanced stage. Why can't thosepeople remove this ugly habit? Is it because they think the earth is a gigantic spit toon? Foranother thing, spitting does great harm to public health. According to chemical laboratory test, one sputum contains thousands upon thousands of germs and SARS viruses if the spitter is aSARS sufferer. As was reported, the Beijing municipal government once mobilized an army of athousand sanitation workers to clean out the mess in Tian An Men Square.
For people to get rid of this uncivilized behav...
The generation gap
Every new generation is different from the one that preceded it. Today the difference is verymarked indeed.
Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comment ismade from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never been truer than it istoday. The young are better educated. They have a lot more money to spend and enjoy morefreedom. They grow up quickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They think more ofthemselves and do not blindly accept the idea of their elders. Events which the older generationremembers vividly are nothing more than past history.
Just look at the teenage girls who scream hysterically over the pop stars and the teenage boyswho copy the stars and grow their hair long and are no longer ashamed of wearing "pretty" clothes, are simply breaking through the chinese traditional reserve and fear of showing theirfeelings. What is more, nowadays most boys and girls are good companions and some of themeven fall in "puppy love." A lot of older people sigh and say, "we did not use to do like this."
Do you think the older people's criticism stems from jealousy just because they could not ordid not behave in the same way when they were young?
·paragraph 1 —...
"Nowadays parents are too permissive with their children." Do you agree or disagreewith this statement?
Today, few people would defend the traditional attitude to children. If you recall whathappened in old days, you would be astonished at the severe and strict education forchildren, for instance, old-fashioned spanking was common punishment for children. As a result, while the parents thus established their own authority, the poor children would never recoverfrom the dreadful traumatic experience when they grew up.
However, as you know, things often go to extremes. Nowadays, parents' confidence in theirown authority has been greatly undermined. Countless articles in magazines and newspapersand tv programmes publicize childcare. When so much over-enthusiastic advice flying about, mum and dad just don't know what to do any more. In the end, they do nothing.
So from early childhood, the kids are in charge and parents' lives are regulated according tothe needs of their off spring. When the little dears develop into teenagers, they take completecontrol. If the young people are going to have a party, for example, parents are asked to leavethe house. Their presence merely spoils the fun. What else can the poor parents do but...
About Juvenile Delinquency
One of the much-talked-about present-day social problems is juvenile delinquency, and its rateof frequency is seemingly on the rise.
It is reported in newspapers that the delinquents range in age from 12 to 18. Only a smallportion have committed serious crimes like kidnapping and murdering. Those cases arehandled through the court system. Most of the delinquencies fall into four categories: brawling, including gang fighting with deadly weapons; theft, mostly petty, sexually promiscuousbehaviour and addiction to drugs. The delinquents are generally placed under temporarysupervision by neighbourhood committees, work units or reform schools.
The causes of juvenile delinquency are varied. Through media we often come across thefollowing cases:
Ill-treatment to teenagers by their step-fathers or stepmothers often lead to family tragedies. School pupil delinquents, being not properly cared for, have chronic behaviour problems. Theirparents are too busy either with business or with gambling. Still, there are cases resulted fromparents' or grandparents' indulgence to their darlings. Petty theft once or twice is notpunished but encouraged. Gradually these petty thieves grow addicted to stealing . Adolescentstried drugs mos...
Choose a Particuler Brand for Children
You have been asked to recommend a particular brand of bread for use in elementaryschools in a small city. Which of the four brands of bread described in the chart would yourecommend? Support your choice with information from the chart below.
Which brand of bread is the most suitable for elementary school children? Before we makethe choice, there are three things we need to take into account: taste, nutrition and cost.
Among the three, I believe nutrition is the most important. Children in elementary schoolsare at an age when their bodies are growing rapidly. Malnutrition will certainly hinder theirbodies from growing, and poor health will often result in poor learning. Taste is also importantbecause tasty bread can help stimulate children's appetite. Children will not like to eat poor-tasting bread regardless of its level of nutrition. A good appetite guarantees sufficientnutrition.
Therefore, I will certainly recommend Brand A, because both its nutrition and taste are verygood.
Neither Brand C nor Brand D is a good choice because the former has a very good nutritionalrating but not a good taste; while the latter has an excellent taste but only a fair nutritionalrating.
Tobacco Production and Consumption
We meet smokers almost everywhere， in the street， in shops， at the railway station， on thecampus and in many other public areas. This explains the astonishing statistic figure of 1.1 billion smokers out of 5. 6 billion people in the world， occupying about 20% of the world＇spopulation.
The harmful effect that smoking has upon people mainly lies in two aspects ： money loss andhealth deterioration. In the figure， we can see that the annual consumption of tobaccoamounts to 200 billion dollars， which， if spent on public welfare， can benefit a great many poorpeople.
It is known to all that smoking does a lot of harm， not only to smokers themselves， but also topeople around who are actually unconscious victims. According to the statistics obtained， approximately 3 million people die of lung cancer and other fatal diseases every year.
Fortunately， nowadays more and more people have become aware of the harmful effect ofsmoking. Tobacco consumption is decreasing. Tobacco production is decreasing （has dropped to 14.2 billion pounds in 1995 as against 14.364 billion pounds in 1994）. The number of smokersis decreasing. Finally， we believe in the advance of society， we believe in a new world withoutsmoking， we believe in people.
The Decline of Small Businesses
During the recent years, countless small busines ses have closed their doors and gonebankrupt. The corne r grocer's , the small dress shop, the beauty salon, all are victims ofmarket competition. Most of them are replaced by other small businesses that temporarilyfill the needs of the neighbourhood but frequently end up, sharing the same fate ofdissolution. More often, the market served by small businesses is taken over by large storesand shops. Businesses like the corner groceries and the dress shops have gone to bigdepartment stores and supermarkets, which not only keep adequate store and variety, butalso provide better environment and service.
Appar ently, it is increasingly difficult for small businesses to succeed in the present complexeconomic structure based, as it is, on small profit margins and tremendou s sales volume. Lackof enough fund and poor management may be the chief cause of this tragedy. In addition, thequality of their commodities often causes suspicion of the customers as many smallbusinesses are found to sell fake products for more profit, thus earning themselves an evilreputation. As to shopping environment and convenient service, they are unmentionable. All of the above speed up their bankruptcy.

Advantages of Getting a Loan from the Bank for My Studies
I am a college student from a farmer's family in a mountaineous area. A year ago, I wasadmitted to a famous university. Before entering the university, I was told that the necessaryexpenses during my four years'study would cost nearly fifty thousand yuan. My parents hadcollected all the money there was to collect, including the money bor rowed from theirrelatives, but it was hardly enough to meet the needs. Then, good news came that I couldresort to the bank for a loan. I thought it was a good idea and so I did it.
My decision was based on the following con sider ations: First, with the loan I can pay thetuition and support my life on the campus.
Secondly, I don't have to depend on my parents who are always worrying about the enormousfamily expenditure.
Thirdly, I will always have the pressure upon me which forces me to study the hard way.
Fourthly, I have to live a very simple life and save every coin possible. To sooner liquidate thedebt, I sometimes work as a home tutor, sometimes a door-to-door salesman, sometimes arestaur ant waiter.
Fifthly, while doing part-time jobs, I have accumulated a lot of social experience, bittersometimes, sweet occasionally, but hap...
Exploited by New Fashions in Clothing. Do you Agree or Disagree with ThisStatement?
Over the years, the great majority of men have successfully resisted all attempts to makethem change their style of dress. The same cannot be said of women. Each year a few so called "top designers" in Paris and London lay down the law and women the whole world over rush toobey. This year, they decide in their arbitrary fashion, skirts will be short and waists will behigh; zip s are in and buttons are out. Next year the law is reversed and far from takingexception, no one is even mildly surprised.
If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame, because they are afraid of the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion. They are annually blackmailed by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have beenworn only a few times have to be discarded because of old fashion. When you come to think ofit, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes andannouncing that she has nothing to wear.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the deliberate creation of waste. Many women spendvast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been wor...
