  Deep-sea vents Ocean-floor migration

How surface winds blow deep-sea critters from vent to vent

EVER since their discovery in the 1970s, deep-sea vents—chimney-like structures on the ocean floor that belch hot water and dissolved minerals into the surrounding ocean—have been one of the hottest topics in marine biology. The vents support populations of bacteria, giant worms, clams, shrimp and other creatures in the inky darkness, often several kilometres below the surface. Unlike virtually every other ecosystem on the planet, these deep-sea communities do not rely on the sun for their food. Instead of using photosynthesis, the bacteria at the bottom of the food chain harvest energy from chemicals supplied by the vents themselves.

The vents are both widely spaced and transient, which means their denizens live a precarious existence. Yet travel between vent systems is apparently possible, even across miles of desolate ocean floor. Creatures confined to islands rapidly head in a different genetic direction to mainland relatives; but researchers have found surprisingly little genetic variation between the populations of even quite widely spaced ocean-bottom vents. Last year one paper described how a vent system that had been wiped clean by a volcanic eruption was quickly recolonised by a variety of larval creatures, some of which seemed ...

From Golf Range to Free Range

出国留学网英语栏目小编们精心为广大考生准备了“From Golf Range to Free Range”,各位同学赶快学起来吧,做好万全准备,祝各位同学考试顺利通过。

There’s a growing trend in the United States to let old or underused golf courses revert back to nature. One parcel in Grafton, Ohio, converting 39 hectares of land back to green space is a lot more complicated than just not mowing the fairway.

  Expanding underused property

In the game of golf, a “mulligan” is slang for a second chance. Not long ago, Royal Oaks Golf Club got a major mulligan of its own when the underused property was turned into a nature preserve. Cart paths were converted to walking trails and water hazards became fishing ponds. That’s finally given Jerry Jewell a chance to enjoy the green space.

"I lived there before when it was a golf course but I never came back and played golf on it. So I never got a chance to see what it looked like as far as the landscape and stuff," said Jewell.

Jewell’s story is something that Joe Leslie with Western Reserve Land Conservancy has heard many times. "There’s a select number of people who would use a golf course, whereas in the case of a passive or active recreation area for that matter, it gives the opportunity for many more people to use it," he said.

Western Reserve has worked on 10 similar projects in Ohio, and golf courses across the country are being returned to the “wild.” The trend is being fueled by a recovering real estate market, the declin...

托福写作材料What adults can learn from kids

托福写作材料:What adults can learn from kids

  0:11

Now, I want to start with a question: When was the last time you were called "childish"? For kids like me, being called childish can be a frequent occurrence. Every time we make irrational demands, exhibit irresponsible behavior, or display any other signs of being normal American citizens, we are called childish. Which really bothers me. After all, take a look at these events: Imperialism and colonization, world wars, George W. Bush. Ask yourself, who's responsible? Adults.

  0:45

Now, what have kids done? Well, Anne Frank touched millions with her powerful account of the Holocaust. Ruby Bridges helped to end segregation in the United States. And, most recently, Charlie Simpson helped to raise 120,000 pounds for Haiti, on his little bike. So as you can see evidenced by such examples, age has absolutely nothing to do with it. The traits the word "childish" addresses are seen so often in adults, that we should abolish this age-discriminatory word, when it comes to criticizing behavior associated with irresponsibility and irrational thinking.

  1:27

  Thank you.
