Brussels is proposing to tighten its grip overoverseas banks operating in the EU in a tit-for-tat step against the US that will raise costs forbig foreign lenders and potentially hurt the City of London after Brexit.

The European Commission will disclose provisions tomorrow that mirror controversial USintermediate holding company rules ringfencing foreign bank capital.

When those were anno¬u¬nced in 2014, the EU complained to Wash¬ington of protectionismand threatened to retaliate.

If adopted in EU law, the commission proposals would force big US investment banks such asGoldman Sachs and JPMorgan to trap add¬itional capital and liquidity in the EU so theirsubsidiaries can be separately wound up in a crisis by European authorities.

The counterblow from Brussels, slipped into late drafts of the proposal, will be welcomed by EUbanks that complain of an unlevel playing field with US rivals.

But it underlines the accelerating trend towards fragmentation in financial rules, asjurisdictions asser...

BRITAIN'S private schools are one of its most successful exports. The children of the well-heeled flock to them, whether from China, Nigeria or Russia: the number of foreign pupils rose by 1.4% in the last year alone. One headmaster recently asked a room full of pupils whether they flew business class to Britain. Only a few hands went up, suggesting they were not quite as cosseted as he had thought. Then a boy explained: many of the pupils fly first class instead.

Yet foreign students, whether educated in British private schools or elsewhere, are decreasingly likely to go to English universities. According to the Higher Education Funding Council for England, 307,200 overseas students began their studies in the country in 2012-13, down from 312,000 two years earlier and the first drop in 29 years. Student numbers from the rest of the EU fell—probably a result of the increase in annual tuition fees in England from 6,000 (10,000)a ...

While a falling leaf is indicative of the approachingautumn and a wild flower can be the epitome ofheaven, a photographer from Michigan hastransformed a humble tea kettle into a vesselreflecting the beauty she encounters on her journeythrough life.

Instead of resorting to phones or selfie sticks, EshaBiswas has chosen to record the most memorablemoments in her life - including her graduationceremony - by taking selfies reflected on the shiny surface of a metal kettle.

"I was fascinated by the way the kettle stretched and transformed the world around me; itseemed to contain a whole little world inside of it, with my figure always at the center of theglobe," Biswas told My Modern Met, a US-based photography website.

The unconventional photographer has taken over 30 selfies over four years in an attempt torecord the world around her in the polychrome globe. And she's not finished yet – “The TeaKettle Adventures” is an ongoing project.

Nobody likes feeling lonely, and some recent research suggests that the ache of isolation isn't only a psychological problem; unwanted solitude impacts physical health, too. Loneliness increases a person's risk of mortality by 26 percent, an effect comparable to the health risks posed by obesity, according to a study published this spring.

And because of this new evidence of the serious ramifications of loneliness, some researchers are investigating what it is, exactly, that makes lonely people stay lonely. In particular, could some behavior be at the root of their isolation?

In a paper recently published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Franklin & Marshall College professor Megan L. Knowles led four experiments that demonstrated lonely people's tendency to choke when under social pressure. In one, Knowles and her team tested the social skills of 86 undergraduates, showing them 24 faces on a computer screen and asking them to name the basic human emotion each face was displaying: anger, fear, happiness, or sadness. She told some of the students that she was testing their social skills, and that people who failed at this task tended to have difficulty forming and maintaining friendships....

  1 Study alone

Sometimes kids who study in a group can pick up new ideas and tips from others. Do you really want to take that chance?

  2 Don't bother taking notes

The mere process of writing down the teacher's comments would make some of the material sink in, especially for tactile and visual learners. If you take class notes, you're more likely to have all the material you need when it comes time to study for a test. Forget that! Don't write anything down, especially if it sounds important.

  3 Fall asleep in class

You can always spot the kids who get good report cards. They are wide awake when the teacher is talking or showing examples on the board. You can tell these kids never watch TV or play video games until the wee hours of the morning. You can secure a really bad grade if you stay up half the night, drag yourself to class, then doze a little while the instructor is talking.

4 Leave your work at home

Despite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely. An unwritten rule encouraging silence, mixed with classic British reserve, means that even though you’re packed into an enclosed space with hundreds of other people, the morning *commute can leave you feeling somewhat isolated.

One London resident, however, is trying to change this.

“You get on the Tube here and it’s completely silent and it’s weird,” says Jonathan Dunne, 42, an American living in London, who has, ironically, started a worldwide dialogue after giving out *badges with the slogan “Tube chat?” last month, encouraging commuters in London to get talking to one another.

“I handed out 500 badges during rush hour in a city of 8 million expecting most of them to be thrown away, but after about 24 hours it completely snowballed,” he says.

Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since featured in m...

We all like to let our hair down come Friday, but studies have shown that some of your favourite weekend activities could actually be wrecking your sleep for the entire week ahead.

For many of us, the weekend is a chance to catch up on some much needed rest, as the monotonous routine we endure during the week is thrown merrily to the wind - but what if we're doing more harm than good?

Here’s how sleeping in, binge drinking and lazy Sundays can affect your weekday sleep cycle.

  You’re sleeping too much

Is there such a thing as too much sleep? It seems so.

According to sleep experts at Sweden’s Katolinska Insitute having an irregular sleep schedule confuses our natural cycle.

Sleeping in really late, taking long naps, or ones that are late in the evening means you won’t have an appetite for regular sleep and it will leave you feeling jet-lagged.

Glocalization (a portmanteau of globalization and localization) is the adaptation of international products around the particularities of a local culture in which they are sold. The process allows integration of local markets into world markets.

The term first appeared in a late 1980s publication of the Harvard Business Review.

McDonald's restaurants' menus adopted the practice and customized its menus to suit local tastes in various countries.

Glocalization can also involve the use of culturally friendly media to encourage the acceptance of foreign products among a local audience.
