  E-learning and E-training

With the rapid development of technology and people’s demand for education mounting, so-called e-learning, or on-line long distance education, has become very popular and important in China. In some areas, e-learning has played a role traditional classroom education cannot accomplish.

Approximately 90 per cent of the world’s new information is stored and retrieved in English. It is vital for China to use the Olympics as a catalyst to boost English acquisition to prepare itself or the digital revolution. To prepare for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, at least 6 million Chinese, including staff for the organizing committee, and in the service, retail, police, volunteer, technical and medical support sectors, reportedly need to improve their English language skills.

E-learning breaks down the barriers of time and location, integrating education resources. When compared with traditional ways of teaching and learning, it is far more cost-effective for both the teachers and the students.

It is widely believed that fresh water will never be used up due to its rich resources such as rain, rivers and wells. In fact, such belief is unfortunately wrong and possibly dangerous. As is depicted in the picture, we are facing serious shortage of fresh water, especially in the northern part of China. The land in some areas has become barren and there is no water coming from the pumps. Definitely, the picture reminds us of the serious situation we are confronting.

Short as it is, people still waste it. With the growth of population and industry, the amount of fresh water in use is also growing rapidly. It is estimated that if not controlled, fresh water will be used up by the next century. Another dangerous factor is the water pollution, which aggravates the seriousness of fresh water shortage.

It is no use only being aware of the shortage of fresh water. It is never too late if we act right now. The first important measure is to protec...

The set of pictures present a distinguishable contrast of the role of the automobile over time: a century ago, people celebrated the invention of such rapid equipment for transportation, which could take us to wherever we want. Yet now, particularly in urban areas, the automobile is more of a trouble as its abundance results in frequent traffic jams. Drivers in the second picture even fall asleep when trapped in this “disaster”.

Traffic jams have long been a problem that preoccupies many metropolitan cities such as New York, Tokyo, and Beijing. The harm and loss they cost are incalculable. First and foremost, they waste a huge amount of people’s time passed waiting idly in their cars. Secondly, cars in traffic jams produce more exh...

see two kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure. It is easy to look around for rebels-- to blame the colleges for charging too much money, the parents for pushing their children too far. But there are no rebels, only victims.

The pressure is heavy on students who just want to graduate and get a job. If I were an employer I would rather employ graduates who have this range and curiosity than those who narrowly pursued safe subjects and high grades. I know incalculable students whose inquiring minds cheer me. I like to hear the play of their ideas. I don‘t know if they are getting A or C, and I don‘t care. I also like them as people. The country needs them, and they will find satisfying jobs. I tell them to relax. They can‘t.

Nor can I blame them. They live in a brutal economy.Today it is not unusual for a student, even if he works part time at college and full time during the summer, to increase to 5, 000 in loans after graduation. Encouraged at commencemerit to go forth into the world, he is already behind as he goes forth. How could he not feel under pressure throughout college to prepare for this day of reckoning?

Along with economic pressure goes parental pressure.Inevitably, the two are deeply integrated.

Poor students! They are caught in one of the oldest webs of love and duty and guilt. The parents mean well: they are ...
