In recent years, CityU has performed strongly in university rankings and is currently among the top 10 in Asia and the top 50 in the world. It is a fast-growing institution with 20,000 students, including 6,500 postgraduate students, and about 1,000 academic staff in science and engineering, business, creative media, law, the humanities and social sciences, energy and environment, and veterinary medicine.

历史：
香港城市大学的前身为城市理工学院，于1984年根据《香港法例》第1132章“香港城市理工学院条例”于九龙旺角成立。最早期的校舍位于今日旺角的工业贸易署大楼。8年後九龙塘又一村达之路的永久校舍落成後，於1990年起陆续迁入新校舍，并把原校舍转交香港公开进修学院作校舍用途。学校获得政府拨地，把原歌和老街临时房屋区的地段作为未来学生宿舍的位址。该校于1995年获政府授予自我评审 (self-accrediting) 资格，并正名为“香港城市大学”。1997年，在原威灵顿中学旧址设立九龙湾分校，专门为自资副学士﹑展翅计划及毅进计划的学生提供上课地点。

在香港高校里，城大尤以工学(engineering)研究实力独树一帜。在上海交通大学最新发布的2012年世界大学学术排名中(ARWU 2012)中，城大在工程技术与电脑科学(ENG)领域继续位列全球50强，排名上升至第32位，稳据香港第一 (高于香港科技大学 ，以及内地清华大学 );此外，城大在自然科学与数学领域亦位列全球前200 (香港前三位);在商学与经济学领域位列全球前100强(香港并列第二)。
香港城市大学(城大)学术研究屡创佳绩，理工科研究成就连续第四年在世界大学科研论文质量评比中名列全香港第一：根据国立台湾大学2012年11月10日公布的世界大学科研论文质量分领域及分学门评比分析，城大的工学领域论文质量名列全球第33位，并连续四年稳占香港第一位。城大科研论文质量在分学门评比中表现尤为突出，资讯学科位列全球十强，排第七位;电机、数学、机械学科均打入全球50强，分别位列第18、26及48位;土木及材料科学科亦位列全球100强，分别排第68及69位。
