Student life,On arriving at UPMC, you join a university community of over 40,000 people, composed of 5 600 teacher-researchers and researchers, 4 400 staff and 31 000 students, including 6 000 international students.While the university is, above all, a place of study and work, your timetable leaves you a great deal of freedom. This is a unique opportunity to join an association and get involved in the university. Department of Physical and Sports Activities.Balance, health, well-being, pleasure - choose your sport!You can enrol in the DAPS from the 1st September 2008 and all courses start on the 15 September 2008.
The DAPS’ Mission:The purpose of physical and sports activities is physical training and contributing toward the students' general education.All of these practices require physical factors such as balance, coordination, perception, sensations, muscle tone, in other words, the complex connection between the physique and its mental and psychological components.A health factor, these characteristics which make up the human element, are expressed through expertise and will be in line with current training challenges.The department's various areas of activity aim to contribute toward building a university culture.The development of this culture is based on clearly identified and defined objectives. It gives access to a responsible practice that demands the development of the critical mind and creativity. It takes the form of implementing and realising individual and collective projects including university competitions.Being a student is also being able to benefit from the activities offered by the university: practicing a physical, sports or creative activity (APSA; Activité Physique Sportive et Artistique) is a part of this. You can attend free courses (at no additional cost) provided by the DAPS, mostly at the Jean Talbot Sports Centre on the Jussieucampus. This service also carries out health education and promotion initiatives. Look about you; the staff from this service are often on Jussieu campus!

Fields medal winners
The Fields Medal is the highest honor that a renowned mathematician can receive.At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians, in Toronto, the Canadian mathematician John C. Fields suggested the creation of a medal to reward outstanding progress in mathematics. Fields did this because of the absence of a Nobel Prize in mathematics.The first "Fields Medals" were awarded at the conference in Oslo in 1936. Fields wanted the medal to be not only a reward but also an encouragement. That is why the medal is given to mathematicians that are under 40 years old.Two to four Fields Medals are awarded every 4 years, during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians.A total of 48 medals have been awarded since 1936, including 9 that were awarded to the French.Six of them received their Doctorates from UPMC or the Paris Faculty of Sciences (of which UPMC is the main heir), or have worked at UPMC as a faculty professor-researcher.
