                              A great loss-Shirley Temple dies at 85
'February 12,2014
BY DERRIK J. lANG, Associated Press
Shirley Temple Black, who died on February 10th at age 85,wasn't just a
child star. She was THE child sUu-the sweet little girl whose shirung smile
helped illunune some of the darkest days the US has known during the Great
Depression.
It's hard today to imagine the super star S irley was once "America's Little
Darling". She sang ancl danced her way to the top of the box office in such films
as Bn:ght Eye.s,Curly Top and Heidi. By 1940,she had appeared in 43 films.
Temple teamed with Bill Robison in four movies, andt their dance on the stairs in
The Lr:ttle Colon,el is still a legendary film moment.
In the 1930s,her mune on a movie introduction assured(倮证)  a packed house. She inspired dolls,
  dresses,dishes-even a drink( alcohol-free,of course) .
US President Franklin D. Roosevelt once famously said that"as long as our country has Shirley
Temple,we will be all right. "
Unlike so many of today's child stars,Temple didn't end up with her name appearing across the
headlines for bad behaviors. Instead of getting her photos on front pages or struggling with drugs and
alcohoI,Temple went on to a second career in diplomacy(钋交) ,including presidential appointments as
ambassador to Ghana.
She surprised a lot of people who doubted her with her grace, knowledge and eagemess to serve. In
fact, her career in public  service (20 years)  was longer than her career in movies( 19). The role she
valued most,however,was as wife,mother,grandmother and great-grandmother.
The world has lost a treasured Hollywood legend. But her movies will allow that little dynamic figure
to continue charming audiences for a very long time.

While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we aU
take for granted-being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of
hot steaming pizza. Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution
to the third one, thanks to this cool 3-D pizza printerl
     About a year ago,NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor,a 3-D technology expert,to build a
device(设备) that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised
that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza
made in common ovens.
IAte last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype(原型) that begins by creating a
single slice of dough (面团)  that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato
"      ..
sauce  -a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and frnally,a protein slice that resembles cheese. While
the video doesn't show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed,it can be ready
to be consumed in 7 seconds.
While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover,Anjan Contractor is far
from ready for astronauts. That's because he stiU has to find a solution to make the food container in the
printer last for 30 years. Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not.
Anjan Contractor believes that the only wtiy that is possible is that the water is removed from all the
ing他dients(配料)  and then they are reduced to the powder form. This,as you can imagine, will not be so
easy. But,while the printer may not be ready for space,it certainly looks ready enough for people on
earth. Hopefully,NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars !
25. Why does the author mention the things that astronauts in space cannot do?
      A. To ask us not to take common things for granted.
       B. To show they live a difficult life there.
       C. To show their life is boring in space.
       D. To introduce the topic of the text.
26. NASA offered  $125,000 to Anjan Contractor mainly to              .
      A. create some new tWe of 3-D printer
      B. attract more companies to work for NASA
      C. help astronauts in space enjoy fresh pizza one day
      D. produce pizza in large quantities to eam great profits.
27. The biggest challenge that Anjan Contractor is faced with now is probably that _
      A. he has no money left to go on with his research
      B. the pizza doesn't seem appetizing to pizza lovers
      C. he has no way to make pizza that can last for thirty years
      D. he cannot make the food container last for decades
28. What's the best title of the passage?
      A. NASA is trying its best to help astronauts eat better  .
      B. Astronauts may soon be able to enjoy steaming hot pizza
      C. NASA is working on making pizza for common people
      D. A 3-D pizza printer has been used to make pizza

Most of us spend our lives seeking the natural world. We go fishing, sit in the garden, have a picnic,
live in the suburbs or go to the seaside. The most popular leisure activity in Britain is going for a walk.
When joggers jog, they don't run the streets. Every one of them tend to go to the park or the river.
But despite this, our children are growing up nature deprived(剽夺).i spent my boyhood climbing
trees. These days, children are robbed of these ancient freedoms, due to problems like crime, traffic, the
lo鸥 of the open spaces and strange new ideas about what is best for children, that is to say, things that can
be bought, rather than things that can be found.
The truth is to be found elsewhere. A study in the US: families had moved to better housing and the
children were assessed for ADHD-attention dericit hyperactivity disorder (多动症). Those whose
accommodation had more natural views showed an improvement of 19%; those who had the same
improvement in material surroundings but no nice view improved just 40/o .
ADHD is one of the ~;reat problems of modern childhood. One study after another indicates that
contact with nature gives huge benefits to ADHD children. However,we spend money on drugs rather than
on green places.
The life of old people is measurably better when they have access to nature. The increasing concem
for the growing population of old people is in quality rather than quantity of years. And study after study
finds that a garden is the single most important thing in finding that quality. Even problems with crime and
a&;ressive behaviour are reduced when there is contact with the natuml world.
We need the wild world. It is essential to our well-being,our health and our happiness.
32. According to the author, people enjoy____to seek nature.
A.jogging on the street    B.sitting in the garden
    C. shopping in the supermarket    D.running in the ~rm
 33. From the second paragraph,we can see that二______一。
    A. adults deprive the children of their rights to approach nature
B.climbing trees will certainly do good to the children
    C. children probably spend less time in nature nowadays
D.children tend to be happier asaresult of their material satisfaction r
34.1n what way do people benefit from their contact with nature?
    A. Children with ADHD can be cured.
B.A garden nearby improves the quality of old people's life.
    C. Ptoblems with crime and violent behavior will easily be solved.
    D. Children's performance at school is greatly improved.
35. What is the main idea of this passage?
    A. Access to nature improves our life.    B.Nature treats children with ADHD.
C.Getting close to nature reduces cnme.    D.Man can't live without natural areas.  ~

W: I didn’t know you were going out. Why didn’t you wind the clock?
2. W: For California trip, I’ve packed light clothes, sunglasses, and my camera. Anything else you can think of?
M: Well, I think the only thing I didn’t hear on your list is a bathing suit. Remember, California is one big beach.
3. M: I’m responding to an advertisement in the newspaper. It says here that you want a housemate.
W: Ha, ha. I hope you aren’t serious. I lived with you and Mum and Dad long enough. I want a housemate that is not family.
4. M: I teach kids with learning difficulties.
W: Really? That must be really rewarding.
M: Yeah, it can be, I suppose. But it’s actually quite frustrating too. Sometimes it’s difficult to see any improvement. It really takes much brain to do this job.
5. W: Excuse me, but could you tell me where I can change American dollars into British pounds?
M: There is a bank opposite the supermarket.
W: Well, I know it,but it’s already past its closing time.
M: Then why don’t you try the one next to the railway station?
6. M: Celia, why have you written another romantic novel?
W: Well, I find romantic fiction easy to write, but my next novel won’t be a romance. I’m hoping to write something different, possibly a detective story.
M: I’m interested in the character of Felix. Is he anyone you know from real life?
W: No. I’m glad I don’t have a Felix in my life. I’ve been happily married for over15 years to Richard Marsh, a politician.
M: Celia, thank you for talking to me. I hope Hot Lips will be successful.
7. M: I’ve just finished college. I’ve been studying archaeology. And for the last month I’ve been working as a postman.
W: And what are you doing in London?
M: I’m trying to find a job. I’ve been going round museums to see if they need anybody. I’ve been writing letters for weeks!
W: Have you had many replies?
M: A few, but not many. I’ve written at least thirty letters.
W: Poor old you!Look, let’s go and have a cup of tea, and we can catch up on some more news.
  M: What a lovely idea!
8. W: Hello? It’s Melanie speaking.
M: Hi Melanie. It’s Tim here. I’m really, really sorry about lunch today.
  W: I waited for a whole hour!
M: I was really busy at work and one o’clock went past without me even noticing it! I truly am sorry. I should have remembered.
W: I’m really busy at the moment too. You really could have called a bit earlier.
  M: You’re right, I’m sorry.
W: Well, it’s all right. Forget it.
M: No, I can’t forget it. Why don’t we have lunch on Wednesday? I promise I’ll be there!
  W: I don’t know.
M: Come on, one o’clock! I’ll be there.
W: Well, OK… Oh, sorry I just remembered I have a hair appointment at that time!
M: Oh, not to worry. Maybe we can meet at the same time on Thursday.
W: Ah, yeah, that should be OK! Sorry, you’ll have to excuse me, I have to cook dinner.
M: No problem. I’m really sorry for today.
W: Don’t worry. It’s OK. See you Tim!
9. W: I’m fed up with sitting on packing cases, Joe. Don’t you think we could buy at least two chairs?
M: Do you know how much new chairs cost?
W: Yes, I know. It’s terrible. But I have an idea. Why don’t we look for chairs at a street market? Look the guidebook here. Portobello Road. We’d better hurry up. It’s only open on Saturdays.
  M: OK.
  … …
W: Here we are. It’s very exciting, isn’t it? Look at that old tablecloth and those beautiful curtains.
M: Aren’t we looking for chairs?
W: Yes, but we need curtains. Come on. The curtains are beautiful but they’re very dirty. But it’s a real bargain.
M: Why don’t you wash them?
  W: I can’t. They’re too big. I’ll have them dry-cleaned.
M: And what are you going to do about those holes? Can you mend them?
  W: I can’t. I’ll have them mended.
M: How much will all that cost? I never want to see another bargain, and we still haven’t got any chairs.
10. W: Colour affects our moods, so think carefully about what colours you use in your house! You could paint your living room walls green, for example, because green helps you to feel peaceful and calm, but don’t paint them red unless you want to be in a bad mood every time you’re in there!
Thinking of painting your bedroom blue? Great idea! Blue will help you to concentrate and feel calm. Use another colour as well though as too much blue will make you sad. Add some yellow to keep things cheery!
What about the kitchen? Well,  how about painting the kitchen purple if you want to create imaginative new recipes? Orange is a good choice too. It’ll make you feel energetic. Why not paint the bathroom white to help you organize your thoughts while taking a relaxing bath? Stay away from black, though, unless you want to scare your guests!
Basically, it all depends on how you want to feel! For more information and advice from a professional colour expert, call 020-8765432.
