Canan Ziylan:Canan Ziylan chose to do the specialisation Public Health  & Nutrition at Wageningen University and graduated in 2011.After finishing  this programme, students usually find jobs all over the world, but some stay  close to home. The latter was the case for Canan, who now works for Wageningen  University as a PhD candidate. She studies protein enriched meals for elderly  people who cannot do their own cooking anymore, in order to reduce the risk of  malnutrition. Her PhD project brings her into contact with many different  stakeholders; doctors, dieticians and, of course, the elderly themselves. The  elderly are usually very excited about getting to participate in a study of the  WUR. Many of them are lonely and do not get to go out very often. Participating  in this study allows them to strike up new acquaintances. Canan’s work therefore  has a positive influence on many different levels.

  Alumnus Edwin Cuppen

Edwin Cuppen obtained his degree in Molecular Life Sciences at Wageningen  University in 1994.He continued his academic career in Nijmegen, where he  obtained his PhD. He currently works in Utrecht as a researcher for the Hubrecht  Institute, where he specialises in genome research in relation to stem cell  biology and cancer. He is also connected to the University Medical Centre in  Utrecht as a professor in human genetics, where he studies the properties and  causes of cancer and tries to provide advice on suitable treatments based on  these studies.“What drives me is my curiosity. I like to work with a passionate  group of young researchers, and new challenges and technological developments  keep fascinating me. That’s a great combination, where social relevance and my  innovative research naturally intersect.”

  Alumnus Fedor Gassner

Fedor Gassner obtained his Master in Biology at Wageningen University in  2006.He continued his career with a PhD on the ecology of Lyme’s disease at the  Chair Group Entomology. Fedor currently works at the National institute for  Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). Within the RIVM, he works for the  department of Infectious Diseases on the prevention of tick bites and Lyme’s  disease. Fedor does not only conduct research into Lyme, he also works on  education regarding ticks and Lyme’s disease. Together with several colleagues,  he has made flyers and a movie, and has even developed a game for children that  teaches them about ticks, the risks related to them, and how they can recognise  tick bites.

  George Lubbe

"Wageningen UR has a hell of a position as a knowledge centre in the field  of agriculture and food. They must build upon this. And I like to contribute by  strengthening the relationship between Wageningen UR and the business  community."George Lubbe studied agricultural economics at Wageningen University  and after graduating in 1970, he went to work for Unilever. He then worked for  various companies in the industry until in 1982 he returned to Unilever as a  member of the Board of Directors of UTD, a fodder company. Jan van der Hoeven

I look back on my student days with great pleasure. As a native of  Wageningen, I have always taken a special interest in Wageningen University,  both personally and professionally.'Many Wageningen graduates work for NOTOX, a  company which I co-founded and where I have been a director for almost 25 years.  I am a strong advocate of cooperation between businesses and knowledge  institutes because that is what lies at the heart of sound and workable  innovative ideas. It was mainly the need to deploy knowledge to develop new  business ventures in the Netherlands that prompted me to commit to my role as a  Wageningen Ambassador. Wageningen University is already very active in this area  and I am doing whatever I can to help it along.’Jan van der Hoeven graduated  with distinction in Environmental Hygiene in 1978 and began his research career  in the Toxicology Department at Wageningen University. In 1984, the European  Environmental Mutagen Society presented him with the Young Scientist’s Award for  his research on the relationship between nutrition and cancer. One year earlier,  in 1983, he had co-founded NOTOX with Felix Debets and Klaas Noorduyn. In 2005,  NOTOX was integrated with WIL Research Holding Inc, a group of service providers  for the pharmaceutical industry. In 2003, Jan van der Hoeven won the entrepreneur  prize of the Wageningen University Fund. He followed this up in 2004 by founding  VitrOmics, now VitrOmics Healthcare Holding and the parent company of PamGene  which develops technology for 'personalised medicine'. He also invests in and  supports numerous start-ups in Life Sciences via a private incubator called  WesterToren Innovation Centre.

  Nettie Buitelaar

'In my work I often meet people from Wageningen in unexpected places. I  have noticed that they are people with an open attitude to society who are  capable of creating links between different disciplines'.After completing my  studies in 1986, I obtained my doctor’s degree in bioprocess technology under  Prof. Hans Tramper in 1991. From 1990 – 1992 I worked for TNO as project leader  biotechnology. Afterwards, I returned to Wageningen and worked as department  head biotechnology from 1992 – 1999 at ATO-DLO. In the meantime, from 1996 –  1998, I followed an MBA course at TSM Business School in Enschede; this was a  prize which I won in a competition that Intermediair held for “women engineers  with ambition”.Science and business. After obtaining my MBA I wanted to work more  in the area of science and business and moved to Gilde Investment Management, a  venture capital company, where I held the position of ‘senior research analyst’  biotechnology. From 2000 I was director of the national BioPartner programme, a  programme set up by the then Ministry of Economic Affairs ‘to stimulate  entrepreneurship in life sciences’.In 2002 I transferred to the company Xendo  Biopharmaceutical Services in Leiden, a consultancy company in Leiden. In that  position I was asked in 2005 to set up an organization which would further  develop the already established Leiden Bio Science Park. I took up the challenge  and for nine years I was director of the organization, the Leiden Bio Science  Park foundation, no longer via Xendo but via my own company.Today, I'm  co-founder of a the international biotech company BiosanaPharma which is working  on a spectacular reduction of the production costs of monoclonal anti-bodies  thanks to new bio process technology.

  Mariënne Verhoef

‘The Wageningen Ambassadors platform gives me a channel to express my  involvement with Wageningen UR. I have benefited a lot from my time at  Wageningen and look back on it with pleasure.’After completing her degree in  Land Development at Wageningen University in 1984, Mariënne Verhoef taught for a  while at the ROC regional training centres, but quickly changed tack and joined  the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, where her career as an  urban planner began. She was appointed project leader at the regional  directorate and then switched to management, as head of the outdoor recreation  department. In 1995, Mariënne Verhoef was appointed deputy director of P&O  and, two years later, director. Her next career step took her to the Ministry of  Finance where she held the post of Deputy Secretary General until 1 October  2006.

  Alumna Ilse Pastoors

Ilse Pastoors had planned on studying medicine, but came to Wageningen to  study Health and Society.Ilse Pastoors had planned on studying medicine, but  came to Wageningen to study Health and Society. She thought the broad degree was  very interesting and graduated in 2011. She almost immediately found a job at  the directorate of Zorgmarkten Care at the Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit (Health  market Care at the Dutch Health Care Authority). She is responsible, amongst  other things, for the AWBZ-institutions. These are institutions for people with  a serious impairment who require long term care. Ilse is very enthusiastic about  her work: “What you do directly influences the health care structure. This makes  it socially relevant and that gives me a lot of energy.”Especially the  analytical skills and the job experience she obtained during her studies and her  internship come in handy. In addition to her regular work, Ilse is also a member  of the works council and organises a lot of activities for her colleagues at  Young NZa. In short, she is enjoying herself very much!

  Jos Bregman

I graduated as an engineer of Environmental Hygiene back in 1992. Then I  wondered: was I going to become old sitting behind a computer and at conference  tables with only the occasional chance for field work?Since then I strove and  became an artist, tree expert and Internet professional. And every day I can  smell the wood in my workshop. I also spend a lot of my time out doors: I cut  giant trees into pieces, like an old oak tree in Zoelen (NL). I hand out trees  in my network: my group of friends, all customers of a company, LinkedIn groups.  Everyone gets his part of what used to be a tangible whole. In this way I create  balance in virtual networks. I've come to realise that this fulfills a  need.Recently I continued to develop by studying European Tree Worker. Because  I'm also a caretaker of trees, I can now harvest the whole tree myself including  the branches at the top. I then feel like a modern day druid, except that my saw  isn't made of gold. And for school children I built the Nature Access Intranet.  Children who want to be part of nature should have quick and simple to access  it!Since then I've managed to weave Nature Access with commercial business. I  work as Manager Sustainability at video butler Imotions company, where I have  Corporate Social Responsibility Policy under my care. Finally, I was drawn to the  Bulgarian nature, where I've created a series of art projects: Part Time  Neighbour and Nature Access Honey.

  Alumnus Frank Salet

After his bachelor in Geodesy and Geo-Informatics at Utrecht University,  Frank Salet came to Wageningen. For his master, he followed a wide range of  courses, such as geo-statistics, spatial modelling, remote sensing and  programming. “Together”, he says, “these courses have formed the luggage that I  still use for each job I take on.”Frank has had a wide variety of jobs ever  since he left Wageningen. During his career, he has been trying to find jobs in  fields in which the use of GIS is unique, challenging or still developing. His  first job was an internship at a meteorological institute. This was followed by  a job at a consultancy firm, which was mainly focusing on Business Intelligence.  Next, Frank went to work for a large American software company, where he  specialised as a pre-sales consultant for the Benelux region. After that, he  worked as a geospatial engineer for a mining company in South America.Currently,  Frank works as a manager for a non-governmental organisation in Africa. The  project he is working on is about the eradication of polio in Nigeria. The NGO’s  task consists of mapping the project area and supporting the polio vaccination  activities with maps and spatial analyses. For the project, he has moved to  Nigeria to set up the GIS work. About twenty GIS specialists work together on  this project. They use satellite imagery to find and mark where people live, so  vaccination teams know exactly where to go.Frank has fond memories of his time  in Wageningen.

  Alumna Tessa Steenbergen

Tessa finished her Master Development and Rural Innovation at Wageningen  University around 2010.Her studies had always required a lot of writing, but  deep down she had always wanted to tell her story in a more creative manner. And  that is how she ended up in Leiden, where she did a minor in Visual Ethnography.  This would become the start of her career as a documentary filmmaker. Tessa’s  background in Wageningen is present in the subject matter of her documentaries;  she primarily focuses on topics related to agriculture and development. Her work  is well received. In 2013, one of her documentaries even aired on national  television by Dutch broadcaster EO.“I tell stories, or help to tell stories, of  which it is important that they are heard.”In addition to making documentaries,  Tessa also gives participating video training sessions. During these sessions,  people learn to tell their stories though video. By doing this, Tessa, for  example, helps refugees and farmers in developing countries find their  voice.
