With industries and business developing quickly, the number of trees in many big cities has dramatically reduces. Efforts are being made to prevent people from cutting more trees. But a lot of trees are being destroyed by people who have never thought of the importance of green plants.Making cities greener has many advantages. First, it can make our air cleaner. Some researchers have proved that trees can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through absorption. Second, it can make our cities more beautiful. With trees and flowers everywhere, living conditions can be improved.
Finally, it can produce timber----an effective way to solve the problems of limited supply of natural resources.
Making our cities greener requires nationwide efforts. People in every field should not only know about the importance of keeping the quality of urban environment, but also take common action to plant more trees and flowers so as to improve our living conditions
tucked away in our subconsciousness is an idyllic vision. we see ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent. we are travelling by train. out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving on a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls.
but the uppermost in our minds is the final destination. on a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. bands will be playing and flags waving. once we reach there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will be fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. how restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes loitering, waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.
"when we reach the station, that will be it", we cry.

compared with the forty year old shabby dormitory i am living in now, the one i lived in for three years in high school was heaven: three students shared one brand new suite with air conditioners and a bathroom.
in three years time we changed it thoroughly:the color of the floor turned from bright pink into muddy gray, and the closet a hive of insects proliferating among piles of rotten fruit.and our masterpiece was the bathroom, a never drying swamp which served as the habitat of various kinds of mold, and even rodents, rats would occasionally take the trouble to pay us a visit, and.., all three of us felt like sobbing when we at last had to say good bye to our lovely filthy dormitory. maybe it is because that the dormitory had changed us as well as we'd changed it.
the first lesson our dormitory taught us was to look after ourselves. frankly speaking, we were not good students at all. i still remember the underwear that was soaked in soapy water for one and a half years before it was finally thrown away. almost each of the boys' dormitories had gradually developed its own unique "fragrance" usually a mixture of rotten fruit, unwashed socks, stunk towels and some junk food. we could tell one dormitory from another by sniffing instead of looking. our tolerance towards untidiness was amazing.

the week long national day holiday which started from oct. i has become not only an occasion for celebrating the birth of the nation but also a time for people to relax. after all, under great pressure every day, everyone longs to slow down and rediscover the real fun of life.
my only hope for the week long holiday was also to relax myself well, instead of playing well. i slept until the sun was shinning above, ate my favorite food which i scarcely have because of their high calorie, and enjoyed different kinds of films from day to night.
usually, i seldom went out during the holidays, as it was too terrible to battle the national day holiday crowds. but this time, i couldn't resist myself against the performance of music fireworks whose theme was "all colors of music".
as a part of the international music fireworks festival, the performance of music fireworks, designed by the swedish artists, was staged at century park in pudong on the night of october 3.
the scene, a spectacular combination of fireworks exploding in harmony with the music, made powerful visual and audio impact on me. the artists selected for the performance various pieces of music, including classical music by beethoven and strauss, some representative popular compositions such as "my heart will go on". with the music, the fireworks were set off in different formations. i could admire the fireworks in the sky as well as their reflections in the water.

the park bench was deserted as i sat down to read beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. disillusioned by life with good reason to frown, for the world was intent on dragging me down.
and if that weren't enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. he stood right before me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, "look what i found!"
in his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals all worn - not enough rain, or too little light. wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, i faked a small smile and then shifted away.
but instead of retreating he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with surprise, "it sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. that's why i picked it; here, it's for you."the weed before me was dying or dead. not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. but i knew i must take it, or he might never leave. so i reached for the flower, and replied, "just what i need."
but instead of him placing the flower in my hand, he held it mid-air without reason or plan. it was then that i noticed for the very first time, that weed-toting boy could not see: he was blind.
i heard my voice quiver, tears shone like the sun. as i thanked him for picking the very best one. "you're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play, unaware of the impact he'd had on my day.i sat there and wondered how he managed ...
today is my mother's birthday. my father and i wanted to give her surprising birthday presents.
in the morning we went to the shop and bought a big cake. then we went to the market and bought some food that mother liked very much. after getting home, we began to prepare our presents. father went into the kitchen to prepare a big meal while i went into my room to make a birthday card. i drew three rabbits biggest one was eating grass while the other two were playing happily under a big tree. to tell you the truth, it was my family because all of us were born in the year of rabbit.
it was almost 12 o'clock. the delicious food on the table made my mouth water. everything was ready. we seated ourselves at the table, waiting for my mother. when we heardthe sound of opening the door, we hid behind the door and cheered, "happy birthday!" as soon as mother came in.
mother was seated at the table and i showed her my present. she looked at it and smiled. "have a taste of the delicious food. it was made by father himself."i said. mother looked at my father and me, picking up her chopsticks.

My First English Duty Report
I still remember the day when I did my first English duty report a year ago. I was then a student of Senior I. One day, the English teacher told us that from then on we would make a duty report in English. Someone made faces and many cried out, “Oh! What an idea!”
“Why, you are so afraid of it!”the teacher was surprised.
“Our English is so poor!”some of us shouted. We are afraid we can'tdo it well.
“That is a good chance to practise your spoken English. Don't worry about it. Have a try,”the teacher said encouragingly. We became silent at once.
The day came when it was my turn to make a duty report. The girl who sat beside me kidded① me, “Are you afraid? Oh, you look a little nervous.”I nudged② at her, then slowly got up from my seat and went to the front of the classroom. As a shy girl, not accustomed to speak in public, I felt my heart beat fast.
Now I was standing on the platform . I took a look at my classmates and then plucked up③ my courage to speak up. The teacher stood beside me, smiling. I wanted to tell an English joke but I was so nervous that I forgot to begin with“It's my turn to give you a duty report.”I didn't dare to look straight at my classmates, but kept looking at the wall or the ceiling. I felt that they were staring at me.
Suddenly I found I had made some mistakes, which made me forget what the next sentence should be . But the classmates were still listening to me attentively...
