“It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good”—these were the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the_ permissive_ period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve(获得)their best in school. The schools and educators made it easy for us.They taught that it was all right to be parents who took a letalone(放任的,不管的)policy. Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we've made a terrible mistake.

One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students—“so passive(被动的)”—wonders what has happened.Nothing is demanded(要求)of them, she believes.Television, says Klompus, causes children's passivity.“We're talking about a generation of kids who've never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, instead of saying go and look it up,you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”

Yes,it does.It takes energy and it takes work. It's time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It's time to take the car away,to turn the TV off,to tell them it hurts you more than them ...

Everyone has good days and bad days.Sometimes, you feel as if you're on top of the world and all the questions on your maths test might seem easy. But occasionally you feel horrible, and you lose things and you cannot focus on your schoolwork.

For more than 20 years, scientists have suggested that high selfesteem(自尊)is the key to success.Kids who feel good about themselves, said scientists,do better in school and have fewer emotional(情感的)and behavioral problems than kids who have a low opinion of themselves.

Now new research shows that focusing just on building selfesteem can bring bad results if it makes you less likeable or more upset when you fail in something.

“Forget about selfesteem,” says Jennifer Crocker,a psychologist at the University of Michigan,US.“It's not the most important thing.”

Crocker's advice may sound a bit strange because it is good to feel good about yourself.

Studies show that people with high selfesteem are less likely to be depressed, anxious, shy,or lonely than those with low selfesteem.

But,after reviewing about 18 000 studies on selfesteem,Roy Baumeister,a psychologist at Florida State University, has found that building up your selfesteem will not necessarily make you a better person.

  He believes that ...

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing?Sometimes, when Mr.Ballmer and his 16yearold daughter,Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture,he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom,‘Hey,the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer.“There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits(轨道).

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families.Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago.Now they are comfortable and common. And parentchild activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message,“To my mother,my best friend.”

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.

“There's still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but th...

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer,Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son:suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents.“The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.

Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14yearold daughter.“She used to cuddle up(蜷伏)with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark.“Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something.Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”

Before age 11,children like to tell their parents what's on their minds.“In fact, parents are first on the list,”said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers.“This completely changes during the teen years,”Riera explained.“They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”

Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers' lives are in the best position to help them.To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say,and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young....

The whole family objected when my brother and I said we were going to spend our Christmas holidays abroad.Mother said that as there would be a family reunion party,we would have to be present.Though we always enjoyed these occasions, nothing could persuade us to stay.

Two days before Christmas,we went to a small town in southern Germany. We spent the whole Christmas Eve sightseeing. There was so much activity in the town that it led to our excitement. The streets were crowded with people and the shops were full of wonderful things. In the evening,we went to listen to Christmas songs sung by children and the brightly lit trees in the main square.

We returned to our hotel late that night, greatly looking forward to the next day when we planned to have a meal at the best restaurant in town. But in the morning the streets were deserted. To make matters worse, all the shops, including the restaurants, were shut.

We returned to our hotel, feeling very miserable. All we had was a bag of fruit which my brother had happened to buy the day before. Our thoughts sadly turned to home where,at that moment, the whole family must have been wishing us a “Merry Christmas”.

  1. Where did the writer and his brother plan to spend their Christmas holidays?

  A. At home with the whole family.

In the early nineteen fifties, researchers found that people scored lower on intelligence tests if they spoke more than one language.Research in the sixties found the opposite. So which is it?

Researchers presented their newest studies last month at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The latest evidence shows that being bilingual (双语的)does not necessarily make people smarter. But researcher Ellen Bialystock says it probably does make you better at certain skills. She says bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention—a function called the executive(执行的)control system.

Ms Bialystock is a psychology professor at York University in Toronto,Canada. She says the best method to measure the executive control system is called the Stroop Test.A person is shown words in different colors. The person has to ignore the word but say the color. The problem is that the words are all names of colors.

Her work shows that bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to,because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to limit one to be able to speak in the other.

This mental exercise might help in other ways, too.Researchers say bilingual children are better able to separate a word from its meanin...
