He started attending school at the age of nine, but was forced to leave when he was 12 because his father had been put in prison for getting into debt after carelessly spending his money. Dickens worked in a shoe factory during his father's time in prison. Fortunately, his father was released from prison later the same year and Dickens was able to return to schooL
At the age of 15, Dickens started to work as a clerk. Then he was given a better-paid job as a law court reporter, because he could write quickly.
In 1836, he then decided to write his first book, Pickwick Papers , a kind of comic for adults. This book was followed by many more including Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby , and so on.  With these books, Dickens continued to describe the poor conditions that the working classes and poor people had to live under. He hoped that by doing so, things could change for the better but the situation just seemed to get worse.
In 1842 ,  Dickens went to America and lectured in favor of international copyright,  so that authors could get paid when their books were published in another country. By 1857, Dickens was famous for his writing and he had gained many international fans.  He became very rich and was able to tour America and Europe to talk about his works.
In 1860, Dickens wrote one of his most popular stories, Great Expectations, the story of a young boy, with no money, who aspired to become rich one day. Perhaps Dickens was thinking about his own early life when deciding on the topic of the story.

The Amazon Rainforest covers 6 million square kilometers of jungle and river and spans over eight countries, half of which is in Brazil. It is home to millions of species of vegetation and animals, some of which are still being discovered today. It is also the world's largest supplier of oxygen and is a treasure chest for medical researchers who are experimenting with different plants in hopes of finding cures for diseases like cancer and AIDS. However, the world is at risk of losing this rich rainforest because of deforestation caused by the actions of loggers, farmers and settlers.
The Amazon Basin has lost 20% of its rainforest since 1970. Cattle farmers have continuously cleared the land for cows to eat on~ and crop farmers have begun to "slash and burn", a farming method that involves cutting down forests and burning the land to make it suitable for agricultural purpose.  The problem with doing this in the Amazon, however, is that the soil is not rich enough to support multiple harvests. Loggers have been cutting down trees for timber, and settlers have been intruding on the land, further decreasing its size.
One reason why the shrinkage(碱少 )of the Amazon causes such alarm is that it is the world's largest absorber of carbon dioxide. With the continuous destruction of the Amazon Rainforest ,  global warming becomes more of a threat.  It is up to each individual to protest the destruction of the Amazon by making the world know something about this environmental disaster.

    A. it supplies us with timber              B. it gives us fresh air to breathe
    C. it provides us with food to eat          D. it shelters us from winds and rains

Lausanne's University Hospital in Switzerland began testing the vaccine on Tuesday in healthy volunteers. A doctor who only gave her name as "Tina" agreed to take part in the study. She said that a safe vaccine that worked was needed to prevent the spreading of Ebola.
Experts said there was no danger of getting Ebola from the vaccine. At the same time, they said, "What we measure is anti-bodies to the protein which is produced by the vaccine, and we also do some specific and detailed analysis on the white blood cells in the blood to ask the question whether the cells exposed to vaccine have a different biology than those who have not been exposed to the vaccine. "
