My first job was working for a women’s clothes manufacturer at the age of 15. It made me realize what I didn’t want to do for my future employment.

   We found out that Jenny was hearing-impaired(有听觉缺陷的)when she was four and a half years old.           The next generation may lose the opportunity to swim over coral reefs or eat certain species of fish, scientists have warned, as the world’s oceans move into a stage of widespread extinction(绝种)due to human impacts such as overfishing and climate change.

Nearly one in five young people in the UK have been suffering from cyber-bullying(网络伤害). Research suggests that girls are affected more than boys. Many victims said their experiences had damaged their confidence, mental health and even school attendance.
   The study, by academics at Anglia Ruskin University, questioned almost 500 young people aged between 11 and 19. Almost a fifth admitted they had been subjected to cyber-bullying, in which a person uses the Internet or mobile phones to bully another. The 87 young people who had experienced it as victims were asked what impact this had had on them. A third said it had affected their confidence quite a lot or very much, while half said it had affected their mental and emotional happiness. Over a quarter of those who had been cyber-bullied stayed away from school, while more than a third had stopped communicating with others outside of school hours.
   Of those 188 young people who answered questions whether they would seek help with cyber-bullying, only less than half said they would look for support. Those who said they would not seek help feared to make it worse. Those looking for support were most likely to seek help from parents and friends. Steven Walker, who led the research, said, “While most online interactions are neutral(中立的)or positive, the Internet provides a new means through which young people are bullied.” He added, “Many of the people in our study think that cyber-bullying by bullies seen as merely a form of harmless fun, a joke and therefore not an issue. M:English, German, and French.While I was studying in Europe, I used French and German all the time.Now my French is not so good, but I do deep my German up.
WHow do you pratice your German?
M:Oh,the man who lives next door-his name is Heinz-is from Berlin.He and I are always talking about Germany.
WWell,all you need now is a neighbor from Paris!

WDid you have your own room when you were little,Jack?
M:No.i think for the first 17 years of my life, I always had somebody else in the room with me.
WI always wanted my own room, you know, because there were five kids in our family and we had to share rooms. I had my own room for the first time when I was about 15.
M:When I had my own room for the first time in my life, I felt very proud and wrote in my diary,“I will treasure this new freedom!”
WWell, many of my friends had their own rooms even when they were young, even as babies.I was so jealous!But there were only three bedrooms in our house for seven people, so it was really crowded.

M:Halloween is coming.Are you planning to dress up this year?
WI wasn’t going to. Why do they have this holiday anyway?I don’t understand it. People just dress up in scary costumes and eat candy all night.
M:That’s not really all it’s about.Many people dress like their favorite cartoon character or a famous person.They go to Halloween parties and play games. Sometimes,they play funny tricks on each other.
WThat doesn’t sound so bad.Why was Halloween started in the first place?
M:It comes from an old holiday. When people honored their dead relatives.Many people in other countries still celebrate it that way.
WThat sounds better than dressing up like a dead person.
M:Then I can’t wait until you see my costume. You’re going to be so scared!
WPlease don’t say that! I hate those kinds of surprises.What are you going to dress up as?
M:A ghost!

WI can’t dicide which classes  to take. I don’t like any of the ones I’ve signed up for.And two of the ones I really have to take are at the same time!
M:Pass me the course schedule book.Which classes are at the same time?
WBiology 201 and Introduction to Chemistry.They’re both required classes.
M:Let’s find out if either of them is offered next semester.Look here.The chemistry class is.You can just take it in the spring.
WYes,that’s true.And the biology class is in a series,so I need to take 201 this semester.The only problem with taking chemistry next semester is that it meets every day at 800a.m.
M:What’s wrong with that?is that too early for you?
WNot too early. But I was trying not to take classes on Fridays. I want to work in the lab that whole day. I might be able to work for one of my professors.
M:Maybe you can start work after the class is over. It’s only an hour lecture. I’m sure the professor will understand.
WI hope so.

When I was young, I lived in a place that had a lot of trees, many rivers, and was near a big lake. We had a large house with a garden and lots of grass. My brothers and sisters and I played outside whenever we could in our own yard, in our neighbors’ yards, and in the empty yards down the street. We rode bikes and played ballgames with friends. But I always thought that there was something missing in my environment, as wonderful as it was. I liked going to the big lake the most. Even there, though, I felt I needed something more. The lake was big, but you could still see land on the other side. One day, my family took a trip to New York City. As we drove on the freeway, I looked out the window at the ocean. For as far as I could see, there was no land on the other side. I rolled down the window and heard the sounds of the sea birds. They seemed to call me, telling me I would never be able to live away from the sea again.
